I have never had problems in the past, but today on several occasions I have tried burning a DVD and received an error message stating that "data verification failed" and yet there is data on the DVD and while I haven't check it all, I can view the files on my computer.

Any suggestions on how to correct this problem and if so, could you please put them in terms a novice can understand.

Thanks
Attached is the log.

the symptoms might be a data verification error but your log shows other issues that may also cause this.

Nero Version: 6.6.1.4

not really the best version to have. You could go to 6.6.0.18 which is the last stable version of the 6 series or upgrade to Nero 7 series.

Physical memory : 511MB (523760kB)
Free physical memory: 76MB (78376kB)
Memory in use : 85 %

You dont have enough free physical memory to complete a burn .You either need to increase your ram by another stick as 76mb left isnt really going to cut the mustard or close down some of those other applications you have running in the background to free up some memory.

Your pc requires a fair bit to achieve the burn sequence but if you have other applications running then it has to allocate a certain amount of your memory resources to accomodate everything.

Last possible write address on media: 2295103 (510:01.28, 4482MB)
Last address to be written: 2195695 (487:55.70, 4288MB)

you are just within the restriction of 4300 thats a plus on your side.

That statement doesnt hold much water now.I use ritek and once only burnt at 4x.However since upgrading both the disc and pc i now achieve quite a good proportional burn rate at 16 x .

Think its 1 in 10 that fail, thats still very good odds.It doesnt matter whether its data/video/music etc .

Just to add to the other good advice:

You can try turning off the data verification - I rarely use it for any type of disc I do. No problems on my end.

Recorder: <HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B>Version: A102
Firmware is a bit behind - best would be to update to (may not help w/ the data vertification on those CMC discs but should for newer media)
A106

Burning at 4x for CMC would be my answer too. They are definitely below Ritek.
Ritek is usually decent stuff

But no 1 in 10 failures here -with good media like Taiyo or Verb burning at 8x - 12x & sometimes 16x all okay. \

So definitely switch you media as soberfree suggestion.

And the memory in use that zeiram posted.
No Multi tasking and close unneeded porgrams.
Have you done a disc cleanup and defrag, virus & spyware scan recently? If not do those too.

Thanks to all....I guess that's why I was able to add folders one at a time and burned them, and got "data verification confirmed".

I couldn't find anywhere to update to version 6.6.0.18 on the Nero site. As far as the firmware goes, is that really something that I could do myself with my limited knowledge??

Prehaps a little over my head!

Anyway, I am in the process of cleaning up. I've run Spybot, Adware and Nortons as well as CCleaner. I'll defragment next and hopefully that will help somewhat with the overall use of the computer.

It's really not that bad updating the firmware - takes like a minute.
Yes there is some risk but it's minimal at best - like if you lost power so don't update during a t-storm.

Have no discs in the drive - close any running programs and keep the power on.
Now run the exe - you might have to pick the GSA-4163B drive in a drop down if it's not listed. Give it a minute will give you a pop up saying something like success - done etc. Reboot and viola the firmware has been updated.

Best to keep it updated - keeps the drive updated with the newer media codes to give it the right burn strategy, can unlock features & fix any bugs in prev. versions sometimes.

Here's the links for Nero 6.6.0.18 and the clean tool.
Uninstall Nero - rum the clean tool then install version 6.6.0.18

JUST be careful what firmware you up date to.I recently had a liteon that was 3 revisions out and after up dating it to the current found i had gone from a 16X +/- to one that would only burn +r at 2.4.So instead of using that had to buy a brand new one as it was then locked.

We wont say who gave us the firmware thats another story

Just a bit confused....First, I can't see v6.6.0.18 at the link
you gave me, the closest I see is v6.6.0.16. Second, if there are newer versions available for download, like v7.5.9.0A for example, why wouldn't I download something like that instead
As far as the firmware part, can't decide!

The reason we recommend 6.6.0.18, is that as you are using version 6 series of Nero that version is the most stable. However if you said money wasnt really an issue i would of suggested the 7 series oem version or higher.

Both work for me without much problem

I uninstalled Nero and ran the Clean Tool. It asked if I wanted to keep Nero 6 serial number and plugin licence. I selected yes. It also asked if I wanted to keep my personal settings, and I select yes. I tried to install v6.6.0.18, but when I get to the installation wizard, it asked for my user name, which is already displayed, the company name, which is blank, and the Serial#, which I got from REGEDIT. I can select to "back" and "cancel", but install is not highlighted, it can't be selected. Should I have said yes to the removal of the Nero 6 serial number and plugin licence? Where do I go from here.

This is ridiculous, if I can't even get this right, do you really think I should tackle the firmware??

Help!!

(just remembered, in REGEDIT, I had a Serial5 and a number as well as Serial 6. I just checked REGEDIT and Serial6 is gone, but Serial 5 is still there. I don't know if this is important or not.)

When you went to install which serial shown in the installer? Nero 6 or 5? Nero 6's should be there.

Run the clean tool for Nero 5 also.

Might want to run a registry cleaner like ccleaner. Use the cleaner & issues options.

Hey you know how to get to regedit and find the serial so firmware might not be that bad.

Thanks, it is a extremely slow process, but thanks to forums such as this and people such as yourself, I am learning something new all the time.
However, you might change your mind about me tackling the firmware when you hear why I wasn't able to select "install" from the installation wizard. I used the Nero 5 Clean tool like you suggested and it did remove everything from REGEDIT. I tried installing v6.6.0.18 again and the same thing happened, I was unable to select install.......turns out I was ommitting the - in between the numbers! Entered the serial number with the - included and it seems to work now. Thanks so much to all for their help. I might just try to upgrade the firmware yet!

lol - it's happens to the best of us - forgetting about those little dashes :)

Firmware really isn't that bad - Most of the newer ones have like an auto detect feature - if it doesn't find the right drive it will give you a pop up saying something like 'no matching drive found'.

Stick around - lots of info here!
