Ok, I will take my episodic movie as an example. I have "Sex and the City" Each disc is about 7.7~ GB. What is the best way you guys would backup this movie to get the highest picture quality possible and keep the menu intact ?
I did Decrypter -> DVD2ONE -> COPYTODVD/Nero , but the picture quality is not that great. I notice the picture is kind of grainy. What else can I do with the tools I have :

Isobuster
COPYTODVD
DVD2ONE
NERO 5.5.10.42 Burning Rom
DVDXCOPY
DVDXCOPY EXPRESS
Ulead Movie Factory
Sonic MyDVD
DVD Decrypter
DVD Shrink

What do you guys have on your computer ?

You have the prime proggies in making backups. If you want all the things you want, buy another original copy for your backup.

You can't keep everything intact and keep quality. Buy another copy.

You can just chop up the disc into maybe three episodes per dvd-r and retain the quality but in the process lose the menus with dvdshrink.

Nah, dont do any of that. Who may episodes are on each disc?

Rip the contents to the hard Disk. Ascertain how many episodes would fit on one disc without having to compress. Use TMPGEnc DVD Author to select the amount of episodes you want to put on a disc. It will create the VIDEO_TS and all other files for you. Burn to disc. Use the user guide for it in my signature:

One thing that i think is affecting the quality of the back up is the original. The SITC dvds are pretty low quality to begin with.

It good be that. I found a low grade season disc a few time. Its not easy, you really have to split them to get any sort of decent quality (for my projector)

You can used dvd x copy,, to me It is one of the best programs out to keep your video quality plus all the menus but you may end buying extra dvds_-+ etc. :(

I ran into the same trouble with the Star Trek Episodals.

For now, if any of my friends want to borrow one to watch (I don't lend out my originals anymore) I use DVD Shrink and split the disc in to two DVD's; two one hour episodes per disc. Only thing is I lose the menus.

Once I have a little more time I'm going to try Oriphus' method. Sounds solid to me.

You can create a simple menu using TMPGEnc DVD Author. Im doing that with 24 - Season 2 (Just putting 2 episodes per disc instead of the 4)

Hi!
This is my first post here so i hope i don´t make a complete as of myself =)
I would recomend Pinnacle instantcopy for episodes. Takes longer than dvdshrink, DVD2One but gives good quality imho. If that isn´t good enough split them to 2 dvd-r or encode with CCE and make new menues. ( last alternative above my know how level)

lol - no chance of spelling in sweden unfortunately ;-)

I did indeed inderstand what you were saying, and agree its a good, but expensive and time-consuming, method to create the structure of the DVD

I use the same...!
DVD decrypter --- DVD2one --- Nero.
Excellent picture ... no grainy picture at all.
Heard of more ppl with the same problems or other.
Strange... even with LOTR, Apocalypse Now, Green Mile (all long movies) the picture is still good.

You can use DVDxCopy or xCopy Xpress to splitt these in two with exact the same quality.

WizKid, you notice the picture quality when you are projecting on a 60" screen and sitting close to it. I am having to split anything that takes more than 15% compression for the projector. Apain in the ass, but worth it for the quality.

Try using SmartRipper to back up the disc to your hard drive, then try the latest edition of Nero. It includes a program called Nero Recode that will back up the entire DVD including the menus to a single DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW. With a 4X burner and media, the entire 2 step process using SmartRipper then Nero Recode takes only about an hour, and the video quality is very good. I suppose that you could also use any of the many other programs besides SmartRipper to transfer the DVD to your hard drive, but remember that Nero Recode will only work if the
DVD files are completely decrypted.

The majority of films I've ripped so far (ripping out extras , audio commentaries etc..) have been under 15% compression. Even at 30% compression pic looked fine but only on a 28" w/screen tv :) I can see the problem with projectors..

Some studios are using higher bitrates for the main film which means the filesize goes right up (Now that is a pain in the ass lol). Roll on dual layer dvd-r's.. Surely the whole idea of backing up is creating a clone copy of the original in case it gets scratched, perfectly legit if you ask me?

Cheers

I have a normal Widescreen TV-set (72cm).

I guess you can see the quality loss better with a bigger TV/projector.

Yeah you sure can. I compressed Blue Planet around 30% when copying it. However, when i was watching it back on the projector at SXGA resolution, the loads of birds flying just looked like a big mess on the screen. But generally its still pretty cool!

If its an image you will need to convert it to VOB format for all the regular compression tools.

In other words, try not to rip as an image if you want to compress the DVD. In DVD Decryptor:
Mode-->File...then Edit-->Select All
