Hey guys, hope you're all well.
Like everyone else in this forum i'm having major dvd burning issues!
I've tried burning (downloaded) .avi films to make a DVD movie using Maxell DVD+Rs but this lead to a 2 hour encoding process ending with an error message about not enough disk space.
So i converted the .avi file into .vob using Super Video Converter, everything seemed to work fine and the DVD seemed to be burnt but when I tried it in my DVD player it was blank even though there's a burn mark on the disk, the problem can't be with my player as I have previously played DVD+Rs in it. After failing to have any success with .avi or .vob burning I tried burning an mpeg2 file, but again I received the disk space error.
I'm really confused about what's going on, as I've previously burnt some DVDs using the software which came installed on my PC (Sonic Digital Media Plus v7), but after some successful burns this software stopped working, so I downloaded an update which told me it had to delete the previous version, which it did successfully but now the new version doesn't work either.
So i've tried a few versions of Nero all with no success, and I've tried DVD Santa which encounters an error each time I tried to open it, downloading this program from different sites hasn't helped!
I'm really sorry about the long post, I hope someone can help me and any help will be extremely gratefully received!!
Here's an error log from NeroVision if that's any use:

Hi ems46
Use version 6.6.0.18 of Nero. Here are the links to download:
Package 1.
Package 2 (recode, vision)
How much free space do you have on the hard drive?
Run a disc defrag and use a registry cleaner like the free ccleaner. Use the issues and cleaner options.
You may need a firmware update too - may help with the discs. Is this a HP pc? If it is you'll need to check their site and see if one is available.
For the Maxell's if they are made in Japan they good stuff. If not may be iffy.
Other ones to use Verbatim or made in Japan Sony or Fuji.
Try burning these files with ImgBurn.
You'll use the build mode for non iso files.
Give those a go and let us know.

Thank you so much for your help binkie7.
I've currently got around 5gb of free space on my hard drive, it should be loads more but as you can imagine having 70 .avi files is stealing most of the space!
My PC is a Compaq so i'll go to their site and see about firmware updates.
I'll try all your suggestions and let you know.
Thanks again!

Just a quick update.
I deleted Nero Vision Express and ran the Nero clean tool, then installed the version you suggested but it won't allow me to burn .avi files, do I need to convert my file to .vob again?
The last time i did that it left me with one large file that burnt onto disk but wouldn't play in a DVD player!
ImgBurn worked but it burnt the .avi as a file rather than as a DVD film to play in a DVD player.

Getting pretty close there on the hard drive space left.
Some avi's converted can take up to 4.3 gig - so Nero needs at least that and a little more to store temporarily while converting them.
Yeah those avi's are sure taking up space ;)
Do you no longer have Vision to convert these after you updated Nero?
To just burn avi's you can use express and do a data disc but this will only be playable if the player will play avi/divx. Sounds like yours doesn't. Same reason the one you burnt w/ ImgBurn won't play needs to be converted 1st.

Hey Ercix
What programs worked for you? Sounds like it mightbe a NTSC vs PAL format problem on why it plays scrambled.
Have you tried playing the AVI 1st and see if all is okay there?
If your not using version 6.6.0.18 see my post above on links to download that version.

The only programm tht worked was ConvertXtoDVD . And yes I played the AVI. at first on my computer and there was all O.K And I am using Nero 6.6.0.1. Exemple for TMPGEnc and VirtualDub is the same problem I can not Lay n the AVI. fail and I can not understand why. I have readed many posits about converting AVI to DVD . I have readed that for other people all is o.k. they can lay in the AVI. fail. THats my biggest problem why I can not convert. Movie scramble I think because the programm ConvertXtoDVD is not so good and converting by the charapters the movie scrambles.

Ok - ConvertX is a pretty good program - the scrambling may be due to the file being in the wrong format - like PAL format and your in a NTSC region. In the TV format section of ConvertX change the setting from automatic to the format your in - PAL or NTSC.
Update Nero too - use version 6.6.0.18. Here's links:
Package 1
Package 2 (recode, vision)

Hopefully that's it - you should be in the PAL region so set ConvertX to that.
Update Nero to and see if that does the trick.

Hi potolover
No experience w/ TMPGEnc myself so can't help too much there.
Do you have Nero - Vision specially.
You can use that to transcode - if it was a different format problem (maybe due to the scrambled picture you describe) would alert with a popup saying something like 'mostly in PAL format - do you want to keep this format' (or vice versa) click no and Nero will convert to your regions format.

Ok - here's a free way.
Here's a guide by bbmayo - link
And you can get all the software used at this link.
Give that a go and see if it does the trick.

I have been working with the .vob files for the first time and I created the VIDEO_TS folder with all of the file put into it. I opened Nero and dragged the folder into content box and it gives me this message:
One or more VOB files that contain multiple segments can be imported as a single video if their video properties match.
Do you want to merge VOB segments into a single video if possible? (If you click No, each segment will be treated as an individual video.)
Should I click Yes or No?

you can leave them as different menus on the startup screen or you can combine them which will make fewer menu screens when the dvd starts.
