-R is the more compatible format. Read the differences on them by clicking the website in my signature and going to DVD Formats

Your stand alone in the instruction manual (which most people throw out) should say if it only accepts -r or +r. Why you may be told to get a combo, is that it is unclear who will win the media war. You may not want to have an out of date burner. But if your stand alone only reconizes one type then, geting a combo may not be worth it. 32Mb video card is not a weak spot for burning, the video card could be 1Mb, it will not affect your burner. the 512Mb ram is good and you should have to worry too much about Cache on the burner. Go with the best for you and what should work with all your stand alones.

I bought a HP200i DVD+r/+rw in novembre 2002.
I am very satisfied with it burning PS2 DVD and CD games and DVD movies.
It's a + writer and can only write to DVD+r and DVD+rw. The max speed is 2.4x.
The HP300i is out now and can write at 4x speed.

Burning with Nero in DVD-rom UDF/ISO mode alows me to playback burnt DVD movies in almost all standalone DVD players.

Good luck !
