BackItUp fails, V2.7.3 for boot volume C:

I am trying to use BackItUp with the wizard to make a DVD backup of the OS disk. I am running an Adaptec 1420A raid controller set to RAID 1; therefore I have two disks for the boot disk but each is identical to the other.I have tried about everything to get a backup of my C: drive which has about 33.5G used and it is the boot disk. I can make a boot disk for Nero and boot Nero, but I can't make the image of the disk drive. I have tried to use DVD's and it doesn't even take the first disk. It does a crc calculation for several minutes, then says 'that some file are locked but this is normal if this is the OS disk, push ignore to proceed' I push ignore and it fails. I then tried to make the image on a hard drive, and inorder to make an iso image. That also fails in exactly the same way.
I saved the log but it is not readable with a normal editor.
I had the same problem with V6.0 so I upgraded to V7.0 had the same problem then upgraded to 7.7.5 and still have the same problem. I checked the driver status on the channels and they are set to DMA.
I have used Backitup to make a set of DVD's of my data drive and restore that to another disk partition and it worked perfectly. I just can't image the OS disk.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I hope this isn't posted twice, my system seems to have froze. I have included the backup log, I was using an editor that was misleading. If this is the RAID system drivers is there any work around or am I hooped?

I do not use Nero Backit Up, because it only will backup data and does not make an image of your HDD. If you want an image for recovery you need another program such as Norton Ghost or Acronis. I use Acronis and for image of the OS, you can then use Nero Backit Up to return you data to your HDD as long as you have Nero installed.

I have a very simular problem. I purchased the new Aopen DVD 18x drive bundled with Nero 7 Essentials for the expressed purposed of being able to back up and restore my system.......so I thought.
After removing all other CD/DVD software and a couple times of using Nero Cleaning tools and installing their latest update, I finally was able to copy my C: drive partition using BackitUp 2 and thought great, not I can boot from this DVD as it was a partition copy of my boot drive, right....wrong. The DVD will not boot.
Next I thought maybe I can then use the "Create Bootable Disc" feature to at least create a bootable CD using Nero 7 so I can then restore my recently copied drive C: partition.....again failure. The tool to Create Bootable Disc continually fails with an error saying it cannot fine the image files, and it does not bother to tell you what files or folder it is looking for and no log of the action.
I have been trying to contact Nero technical support for over a month now with no success, someone named Dan responed the first time and asked for an attachment of the log file for the partition copy which I provided and I still have not received any reponse concerning the failure of the program to find the needed files to Create Bootable Disc.
This has been my first encounter with a Nero product, and it will most likely be my last. Unfortunately, 30 days has now passed and I am unable to return the product for a refund.
If anyone can help resolve the problem with the Create Bootable Disc, I would appreciate it. What folder or files is it looking for ? I suspect the Nero installation has put some files in the wrong place. I also noticed after unzipping the BackitUp_ImageTool to the correct folder under the Nero BackitUp folder, there are still some files that are zipped. I just assume the program will unzip them as needed ? or should they be manually unzipped....sure wish their technical support would make some reasonable effort to support their product..........sigh

I have had exactly the same experience with Nero support. Usually all I get is canned email faq's generated by a automated system. I have sent log after log since version 5 for various problems and each follow up on a service request is by a different person via email sending a canned response. The questions are never answered even though I clearly number the like 1). 2)... etc. Therefore nothing is resoloved except when you can get help on the forums or figure it out on your own.
What I have been told twice on the forum is to use Acronis for image backup (by other users) but not to use Nero for image backups. I don't know if this is just a narrow personal experience or whether it is common knowledge. So why use Nero... Nero works great for file backups but not image backups; yet why do they have the program if it does work, and why do they market it as an image backup!!! This seems like mail fraud to me.
But be warned, my brother (on my advise based on the forum comments) just bought Acronis workstation 9.1 and he can't get it to do an image backup either. First he buys the program, it doesn't work, and then was told he had to by support to get any support at all. This was the next day after the purchase. So why use it? We urgently need a backup and so far nothing works. But after paying for support he is working with a person and there is some hope this will be resolved.
What I am starting to look into is the SourceForge projects like BackUpPC. These are enterprise solutions that backup and restore anything and it does scheduled incremental backups and it definitely works, it is used all around the world. The problem is the support and getting it set up. And what I don't know yet is if it will work just on a single workstation. I am guessing it will because it is a client server model but I have to find out. There are other options like Norton Ghost that is supposed to work but I don't know if that will backup to DVD. This is what we need.
Regarding your boot disk and Nero. I had the exact same problem with V7.0.??? it could not find the files to create the boot dis, but I just upgraded to V7.7.?? and the boot disk is now created correctly. However I can't make a set of disks of the C drive inorder to use the boot disk to restore. I haven't tried using the boot disk to build the image (I can't remember if it will do this, I think it will). This may overcome vagarities with windows layers because it would have just a very simple dos OS. I booted the boot disk and it did boot correctly however. So I hope this will help you.

Thanks for the heads up about the new update 7.7.5.1 that came out. I have been using 7.5.9.0 update which I installed only a couple weeks ago. So anyway, I downloaded the new update and it appears they have fixed some of the problems I was seeing.
I was able to Create Bootable Disc now on a CD and it did in fact boot to their BackitUp system.
I also tried to burn my Drive G: partition, about 2.35 GB with sucess and they are now puting the boot files automaticly on the DVD. I then wiped (after saving) my Drive G: partition, booted from the burned DVD copy and it put it all back ok. Only problem I seen was it would not let me write the log to my floppy drive.
Now I tried to burn my Drive C: (boot) partition and it failed the first time. I am using Memorex 16x DVD+R media. The failure indicated a write error to media. So I trashed that DVD and tried a new one, this time I set my burn speed to 12x. It took a total of 40 mins to burn and verify at 12x for 4.0 GBs. But it made a sucessful copy this time. Now I just need to hook up my old hard disk and try to restore the C: partition to it to see if in fact I can restore the backup. Hope to try that in a few days, don't feel like tearing my computer open tonight.
Anyway the new update does appear to be working now for the BackitUp 2 and restore.

Windows XP cannot boot from a DVD, only from a hard disk. One exception is BartPE, which is precisely a Windows XP which boots from a CD. If you create an image and burn it to a DVD, to boot from it you must restore the image to the hard disk. This operation destroys all information in the restored partitions, so if it fails, the system will become unbootable.

I am glad this is working out better for you to the point you may be able to get an image backup to work. But for me, further to the above mess, I bought Norton Save and Restore. I can definitely recommend that NO ONE buy this product. It didn't work and the support is abysimal. If you want to get phone support you have to pay more for an incident then the product or... you can use their online support. Charming...which is basically a half to hone hour wait in a chat window then a few trival suggestions to which in my case they did not even pay attention to my questions or answers and the finally .... um, er, um ...ahh, remove and re-install and then go back wait in the queue for another online connection for about an hour. Then, after you get re-connected, you get to be mulitasked by some one in India servicing about 10 people with the above trouble shooting procedure. No racial slur is meant, but everything seems to be farmed out for the lowest bidder and therefore lowest quality.
But I did learn something in trying to get BartPE working, I don't think the SataRaid drivers are being loaded by either Acronis, Nero or Save and Restore. So if I am going to debug this at a driver level I will do it with freeware software. BartPE, driveImage_XML and Cobian backup. I will see if I can get this to work and drop everyone a line. Maybe it is too late and I am unusually ticked off, but I am fed up with the mail fraud advertising that wastes days of my time using professional web site adverts and sub standard products. Acronis, Nero and Norton's Save and Restore all said they worked with sata drives, raid configurations and just point and click to make image backups. Not one of them worked and none of them have software support that is worthy of the name. Acronis is working with my brother on his system after he purchased the $16 support license (not an unreasonable amount), but it doesn't work at present and they are still debugging. So if you factor in your time at $100/hr lost, these $100 products end up costing $1K's of dollars.

Sorry you are still having problems Robert. I am using just standard PATA hard drives so can't comment on the difficulty you are having.
Anyway, today I opened up my comp and installed an older 40GB hard drive to test the BackitUP2 partition image restore. The bootable Nero DVD I made the other day, booted just fine. Looks like they are using a Linux kernel for the OS. I was able to restore my Drive C: partition image and Master Boot Record (MBR) with no problems other than some file verify errors related to the Nero stuff, which is expected as files are changing. Reset my BIOS to boot from the HHD0 and up came my Windows XP and everything looked like it was there. I was also this time able to write the log file out to floppy disk this time, the interface actually was not very intuitive, but finally succeeded.
So at this point I feel Nero has fixed the problems I was having in their new update version 7.7.5.1, and now I feel more secure that I can indeed backup a drive partition and restore it with Nero 7.
I hope you can get your problem resolved too.
