Just curious,

I have a athlon 64 3000+ clocked at 2.01GHz...

I'm building a system for my son and am planning to get a AMD ATHLON64 X2 3800 and its clocked at 2.0 GHz..

I thought dual core processors are supposed significantly faster than single core processors...

Can anyone explain these specs for me?

That's 2GHz per core, so if the app uses both cores then it will be 4GHz (obviously). If the application only uses one core, then it will run at the same speed as your 3000+, but you can use the other to do something else with. EG Video Encoding while Playing a game at the same time. Mine's been invaluable, I no longer have to limit my encoding to night times. Only one game can use more than one core at the moment - I forget what it's called - but games will start coming out that use both cores. IIRC a game called 'Alan Wake' that's not out yet will support up to 4 cores being used.
