Hello,

Quick question-

I am currently downloading a file that is 6.88 GB and I am going to need to burn the data to a dvd and transfer it to my other computer. I know that dvd's only hold 4.7 GB or something like that and I am wondering if there is a way that I can burn the 6.88 GB of data to maybe 2 dvd's or is that even possible. Or am I wasting my time downloading this file and is it impossible? If there is a solution to transferring this file to my other computer how can I do it?

Wow that's a big download!

What's the file format?

You could always burn it to a dual layer - would be easier.
A single layer holds 4.38 gig - a dual layer holds 7.95 gig.

Have an external hard drive? That would be the easiest yet.

Yes it is a huge file, it is some garageband software and it is in "toast" I'm not sure if that is a file format but thats what it says?

I guess I will get a dual layer dvd. I hope there not too expensive.

Not that expensive - say 2.50 a disc - single is much cheaper though.

Make sure your burner's firmware is up to date too.

What's garageband software and and it is in "toast" ? I'm curious.
I assume it is something to do with http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/

Here are some ideas:

(1) Had you considered using WinRAR or WinZIP to try and compress the file. A compressed version on if might reduce it down in size so that you can burn it to a single layer 4.7Gb.

Whether or not it compresses much depends on what the data/format/source exactly is.

Either way both WinRAR and WinZIP have options which allow you to split or define a max file size for a archive file part.

For WinRAR it is the "split to volume, bytes : DVD+R 4481 Mb)

For WinZIP it is "split zip file : 4700 (sized for DVD-ROM)
They say that the WinZIP Pro version can burn directly to CDROM or DVD

however I always like to verify my DVD burns.....and I I doubt that WinZIP PRO burning to DVD does that?

Winrar is compression weapon tool of choice.

(2) You could use a filesplitter to split it into parts, each part a max of say 4.6gb.

Then you would burn each part to a different DVD and then copy these DVDs onto the other computer and use the filesplitter to rejoin the parts again.

e.g. http://www.dekabyte.com/filesplitter/

(3) Are the computers networked? - in which case why not just transfer the file via your network to the other computer?

(4) Try Nero BackItUp which should be able to span large files etc... across multiple DVDs

(5) I assume that your target computer isn't connected to the internet otherwise you would have downloaded the file straight to that computer anyhow.

Are both computers running Windows operating systems, or is one a MAC?
In which case you will not wish to use software that can only run on Windows. WinRAR is available for MAC OS X as well as Linux and Windows
