so, i reinstalled XP.. and yea - it's hardware not software issue (USB)

and also on Vista too.... it's actually pretty hard without USB ports

disable the usb ports thru the bios & get a pci card that has 4 to 5 usb2 ports. can get a combo card that also has firewire on it but will reduce number of usb ports.

You did make sure the broken wires to front usb were not shorting on each other or on something else. Easy to happen and easy to fix. Just a thought since and if they both (front and back) stopped working at the same time this could be the reason.
