I am trying to rip a movie - and on the original DVD, the subtitles seem to be set BY DEFAULT to ON as everytime the DVD is inserted the subtitles are displayed without choosing to display them.

This is highly annoying as everytime I wish to watch the movie, I have to first enter the subtitles menu and select Subtitles Off.

I have tried this disc in several players with the same result and I know therefore that the disc definitely has the subitles on by default.

Is there any way I can edit the IFO files to change the default setting to SUBTITLES OFF?

PS: I would prefer not to delete the subtitle tracks if it is possible in this instance.

Thanks in advance for any help.

You need DVDshrink.. It does all of that for you. Try it out.

I was using DVDShrink - I did not notice any option within the software that allowed me to turn subtitles on/off by default when authoring the dvd, only an option as to whether to include subtitle tracks or not.

Perhaps someone could point me in the right direction within DVDShrink as to where I can set default subtitles on/off ? (or "how" to do it using DVDShrink?)

Alternatively, anyone knows if there is a way to alter/edit the ifo files (I'm guessing it's something in video_ts.ifo thats telling it to defaulting the subtitles on) please enlighten me and others reading this!

I have used DVDshrink since day one. I had one problem like the one you are describing, only it was with the english/directors comment audio track's. I was trying to take out some of the audio tracks. Everytime I insterted the disk it would play with the directors comments instead of the correct audio. Could be a glitch in the software? what version are you using? Have you tried doing it over again? Mine worked the second time around.

I have the same problem.... but only on some DVD's... I just back up "What A Girl Want" (for my little sis of course) and by default the subtitles is on when the movies plays...I have to go to the menu and turn it off or use the remote to turn it off....

Would be great to find a solution... but the problme is you won't know it does that until you burn a disc...

In my case I don't think it's a glitch, as stated in my original post, it's "on the ORIGINAL DVD, the subtitles seem to be set BY DEFAULT to ON".

In otherwords, it's actually the DVD I bought from the store (the pre-recorded one done at the factory) - in which the subtitles are set by default to on, not just the copy I have made!

Thus naturally, any copy would be the same as it's just a direct copy really.

Therefore, I need some external program such as DVDShrink or IFOEdit to change these default subtitles to off - problem is, I don't know how :(

I have tested using both DVDShrink v2.3 and v3.0b5 - I have tried around 3 times with each and no luck yet.

Anyone found a solution yet?

I have exactly the same problem with subtitles.

Using DVD Shrink also. (looking into new version to see if bug has been fixed)

I Don't think the originals would be set to display subtitles as most people dont use them.

I delete all subs now but would be nice to keep them in at the expense of a few mb..

"I don't think the originals would be set to display subtitles as most people dont use them."

Mostly they're not, but this release that I have is :(

I have tried the original disc in several players and it always starts up with subtitles on.

It must have been a mistake when it was originally pressed at the factory (or wherever) - but I would love to know how to back it up and rectify my backup to turn subtitles off by default!

What region is the disk? Not sure but if the disk is for another region maybe it is meant to have the subtitles displayed. Have you tried making it a region free disk ? I didn't catch that is was a original disk that was doing this..

I havent read through the coments, but do you know that DVD Shrink only displays the subtitles that are greater than 1MB. That means you may not actually be deleting them all. You can change that in the Edit >> Preferences tool box. Also, your DVD player may be defaulted to display Subtitles automatically. You can go into the set-up of your standalone and change this.

If this has been mentioned already, im sorry. Was too lazy to read all but the first post ;-)

The disc is Region 2 (UK & Europe) - and I'm playing it in the UK, where its supposed to be played.

I've tried making it region free - but this makes no difference :(

Oriphus-I'm not deleting ANY subtitles, I don't wish to. If possible I dont want to delete them either, just want to try and figure out how I turn them off by default.

Thats easy then. Just change the settings on your DVD play to not default to subs on start up.

Sorry Oriphus, I really think you need to read the original and above posts.

Its not an issue with my player - subtitles by default are set to off.

It is an issue only with this one disc - the dvd movie which I have bought from a shop, automatically plays the movie with subtitles, without me asking it to show subtitles.

It only does this with this one movie, and it does it on all 7 DVD Players I have tried it on, therefore I know it is an issue with the disc and not the players.

Perhaps Oriphus you know how to edit the IFO files to remove the subtitling to default to on?

Ah right - i knew i would run into problems on this thread witout reading the original posts :-)

I believe in IFOEdit you have the ability to edit the IFo file as well as create a replacement for it. I personally havent used it as i have found no need for editing it so far. I only tend to learn how to do things when I absolutely need to.
