Hardware Help Needed- VHS to Digital

Can anyone offer me any advice on what piece of equipment actually works in converting analog VHS to digital? I am having trouble deciding what to purchase. Editing is no problem as I have several programs that I use. I have no problem with my present camcorder. Just want to transer the old home VHS movies to digital and can't seem to get the right equipment to work. Either I get poor quality picture, picture with no sound , sound but no picture. Very frustrating. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks to all.
