Tigerdirect.com is advertising a 4x DVD+RW writer with a brand name of "Ultra" and a price of $99 after a $20 rebate...

This appears to be a Tigerdirect re-brand, but does anyone know who actually made the drive?

Interetin'...that's a link that I pulled from a referral page, and it works ok on this end.

Anyway, to see the drive, go to www.tigerdirect.com and search for ultra dvd - the first hit on the results is the drive in question.

Its working now :-D

One thing i can say is that it sounds like it has a good spec with 4MB buffer etc...

However, its a +R writer and im not a fan of them at all. For the price of it though, its definietly a bargain

a 99 buck drive.

You Might as well throw that 99 bucks into the toilet, saves you the hassle actually paying someone to ship you a defective product, or a product that works for two months.

I had a look at it , it looks crap & I would rather buy a Pioneer for the extra £'s

Pioneer 105 - £100

P.S. -R(RW) format is much more compatible with stand alone DVD players.
Why anyone would buy a solely +R(RW) burner is beyond me !;-)

Tosca: Have you actually used this drive? Else you should not make any comments about it as you have no idea of how reliable it is.

herbsman: The Ultra (or BenQ OEM as it is) has far better specifications than the old DVR-105. For example faster rewriting speed and larger buffer size. So what "after your little look" do you think is crap about it?

And no DVD-R/RW is not more compatible than DVD+R/RW and Pioneer is not the only company able to make good working DVD writers...

A solely +R burner is a waste of time , your not gonna change my opinion on that.

And YES -R is more compatible !!

If you'd answered enough threads on afterdawn forums you'd know how many people do have a problem w/ (especially) cheap +R media not playing in their stand alone DVD players...

Be constructive jsl , we (other afterdawn) users are allowed our opinion - OK ?

The specs for this is DVD+R/+RW. I just read that this drive type is more compatible (this is from Afterdawn.com "Don't be Stumped by DVD Standards"). Or am I not getting it? Please explain so I'm not getting something that's of no good use. So, does anyone know who made this drive?

Thanks!

sisnic , that is more of an advert for Intervideo than anything worth believing...

-R is the preffered choice of ppl that have been burning for the last 2 years at least .
That should tell you something (?)

Also, the top 224 Manufacturers are part of a DVD Forum. This forum supports DVD-R as its main media. What does that tell you? It includes, Pioneer, Sony, Panasonic, Maxell, TDK, etc......

herbsman: No I don't post much here but since this is not one of my favourite forums for various reasons.

All serious tests (for example made by C'T and DV Magazine) show very similar results for DVD-R and DVD+R compatibility and this is logical as the formats physically have very similar properties.

Trouble with cheap media is a much bigger problem with all the crap DVD-R media that exist (Princo, Longten Technology etc) than with DVD+R media although more crap DVD+R media has started to appear now too.

Of course you are allowed to have an opinion but don't expect people to care about it if you don't base it on some sort of fact instead of just the "if-it-is-not-a-Pioneer-DVD-R/RW-it-sucks".

As for support DVD+R/RW has a much higher support by the manufacturers of DVD writers today than DVD-R/RW. You can hardly find any new single format DVD-R/RW format drives now while there are several manufacturers of single format DVD+R/RW drives, for example Benq/Philips, Lite-On and NEC and OEM versions of these like this Ultra.

Man, your heads way up your arse if you think that +R is a more supported format than -R. I understand what you are saying about compatibility with newer players, and the fact that the quality on both are very similar. However, if the DVD Forum consortium still favours DVD-R over +R, then it must be they that are wrong and not you. Has to be that! It couldnt be the other way round, could it?? :p

[ go do your own thing jsl cos I haven't got anything else to say to a man who has his head up his own arse ]

P.S. Some Pioneers are rebadged Benq btw , myself using a Benq/Pioneer 104

A sole +R(W) burner is definitely not a waste of time. It's the preferred thing if you burn data and edit your videos. Somehow people are forgetting that the +R(W) format is technically superior to -R(W) and that's a very visible thing. I wonder why future drives are giving 8x +R speeds where -R speed is 4x.... Don't believe ne ? Check http://www.plextor.be/English/products/PX708A.html

Ok - another person has his/her head up their arse. there is no real evidence to prove that +R produces better quality. however, there is a lot of evidence that states that +R is no where near as compatible as -R when it comes to DVD Video

Also, i think you will also find that Pioneer DVR107 has been on the boards for a lot longer than the plextor or any other writer and they will not release this 8x -R writer until christmas.

Maybe some real research should be done by people before they make a fool of themselves lol. Herbsman, what you say about all this?? :D

I bought the Ultra DVD drive from TigerDirect for the $99 deal, and installed DXC 1.4.1 last night. I backed up City By The Sea on Memorex 4X DVD+R media to try it out. First try was a coaster, then I checked Advanced options>Use Nero Express>Alternate player compatibility. Made a flawless backup at 4x speed (backup required 2 dvds). I was going to update DXC to the newest version, but now I'm not sure, as everything is working perfectly.

The Plextor PX-708A is already available here in Tokyo for abt US$ 330. DVD+R 8x media will be in stores by month-end with samples from Ricoh already available. NEC has announced an 8x DVD-R/+R drive for late October release here.

A multi-burner will do for me TYVM. The Ricoh DVD+RW can work for a "quick & dirty" DVD burn for most consumer DVD Sony and JVC models I have tried.

Personally, I burn DVD-R for video to maintain compatibility and use DVD+RW for data (I am an EMC Storage Systems RSS by profession, where they started with COLD in the early 1990s). I use DVD Decrypter and Nero 5.5.10.5 with no problems.

I have a Sony DRU-510A v1.0C with Drive Speed Selector 1.0 with very good results on TDK "armoured" DVD-R 2x "masters" & "everyday" Ritek DVD-R 4x for video and Ricoh DVD+RW 4x as data backups. I got my DRU-510 for abt US$220 locally.

I will get the Plextor PX-116 (Pioneer DVD-ROM rebadge?) probably over the weekend from Akihabara. We've had issues with Pioneer firmware on this side of the pond and most media sold carry large warnings to this effect (mainly for older models before the A05).

I am new to the DVD burning. I just bought one of the Ultra DVD drives. I burned some video that I shot with my Digital Cam with the DVD Creator that came with the drive. It worked the first time and looked nice on my DVD in the den. However, I am trying to burn a DVD with other files, such as a DVD backup, and Stomp RecordNow and Nero will not recognize my unit as a DVD recorder. I dloaded and installed all of the updates for my progs. I can not find firmware or updates anywhere on the net for the Ultra drive. Any suggestions?
