Going out on a limb here, but that is a pretty old DVD. My guess is that there isn't any special protection, but rather the source disc is scratched up pretty bad after being left hanging around on coffee tables and such.

Make sure that the original disc is free of dirt and scratches and post back with the actuall error you are getting. If you get a CRC (Cyclic Reducency Check) it is a bad disc...see solution above.
