I noticed most dvd-rips are Mpeg-3,or 4 and when i try to convert to mpeg-1 it doesnt work....Can you even burn dvd-rips on vcd...or are they only meant for dvd-r's ?
it never works for me...whenever I run em through TMPGEnc it will turn out with no audio and like 3 hours of black screen at the end of the movie (finished product will be like 5-6 hours long!)

Do make a VCD from a DVD you can use DVDx, it's the easiest way. Have a look at the link at the bottom of my post and at the Articles of this site.
You should be able to do it!
I find TMPGEnc much better for MPEG-1 encoding afonic!
Also his input files are MPEG-4
Steven901, First open your AVI files in VirtualDub and do the following...
1. Click video - Direct Stream Copy
2. Click audio - Full Processing Mode
3. Click Audio - Compression, select No Compression PCM and Click Ok!
4. Click file - Save AVI
Click file - project wizard. Select a VCD template (PAL for Europe & Austrailia, NTSC for North America and Japan) and click next. Now load in the Video and Audio stream (Audio should load in automatically). Now yiou have to select Aspect Ratio (always best for quality to get it right) If it is WideScreen or has any borders, select either of the 16:9 options, if it is full screen choose a 4:3 option! And now click Next.
Tick the box beside Source Range. Click "move to start frame" and click set start frame", click "move to end frame" and click "set end frame". Then click OK. That will stop TMPGEnc from over-estimating file length!
Now click the Other settings button and under the general tab, change motion search precision to "Highest Quality (very slow)". Dont worry it shouldnt be too slow! Now click the Advanced Tab. Change Video Arrange Method to "Full Screen (Keep Aspect Ratio)". Also put in the same aspect ratio again! Then click ok and click next twice and the encoding should begin!
