Whats the best audio compression & bitrate for encoding DivX/Xvid Videos?

Before I used MPEG 2 Layer 3 56 kB/s 24000 Hz
Now Im using Lame MP3 48000 Hz 192kbps Stereo CBR

Now what does Hz mean? And doest it matter?
Would it be better if I use Lame all the time?
I want something that is standard, will play on most if nto all
standalones and has relatively good quality.
Need your opinions. Of course average filesize too.

Thanks

Personally if it's a one CD rip I use MP3 @ 44,100 Hz @ 128 Variable bitrate (VBR), whereas if it's a 2 CD rip I usually keep the AC3 Track from the DVD. What you're using now should be fine really, just use VBR instead of CBR.

Sync problems only occur when you join multiple files, simply encoding the audio that way will not cause any. I'm certain standalones can cope with it, as all scene releases are standalone compatible and (if MP3 is used) all have VBR audio.
