I've got a SOny DVD player that plays DivX files. The problem is when I burn something to CD and play it, parts of the video are cut off either side. I get the black bars at the top and bottom, which doesn't bother me, but I don't want to lose any video off of the sides.

Is there a way to fix this?

The problem is with your TV (overscan), not the player.

Oh, okay. Is that a setting with my TV that I can fiddle with to fix it or is there nothing I can do?

Overscan can be adjusted with a service remote I believe. Might also be possible to zoom out. Also possible to re-encode with black borders.

Basically most CRT's suffer from varying amounts of overscan and everything that you have ever seen on your TV has been cropped by it. Just that this is taken into account when broadcasting, authoring DVD's, etc.

Search for "overscan" if you want more info.

I tried googling for service remotes but couldn't find anything. Can they be bought easily?

No idea. My TV is an LCD and doesn't suffer from overscan.

Ah I see. Guess it's time for an upgrade then.

Thanks for the help.
