Ok... if you guys could get an internal and an external drive, which one would you get?
LG GSA-H22L or Samsung SH-S182M/BSBN (Internal)
LG GSA-E10L or Samsung SE-184M/AMBN (External)
I know the LG booktype DVD+R to DVD-ROM right out of the box. Any thoughts?
XPS Gen.4 3.6GHz, 4GB RAM, 250GB+750GB Seagate HD, BenQ DW1650, BenQ DW1655, Samsung SE-S184M (External) Dimension E520 3.0GHz 3.5GB RAM, 74GB+500GB Seagate HD, Samsung SH-S183, Samsung SE-S184M (External)

I had an LG 4167B and I upgraded to the Lite On LH-18A1P. No regrets. True the liteon doesn't booktype out of the box (there's a utility for that) but the liteon is supported in Nero's CD/DVD Speed Test quality scan where the LG isn't. Besides it burns like a champ (well, for 99% of the folks anyway).

All of mine booktype right out of the box. Too clarify on what I mean by that :) no patched firmware needed. Already has the capability.
Nero & ImgBurn auto booktypes them when I use +R media too. The only time I use the utility is w/ CloneDVD.
I don't have the newer LH-18A1P though. Nero doesn't auto booktype on it?

The newest is the 20x speed - no real good background on that one.
The one Playr has - the LH-18A1P 18x - would be the next newest one.
Looks like most are good with that one.

Hi binkie,
Thanks for dropping in. Strange, because I'm using Nero Burning Rom 6.6.1.18 and there is no option to select Book Type setting after I've choosen my recorder (i.e LH-18A1P). Also, I used DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 and there I can choose to booktype but the 18A1P just ignores to booktype it. Both failed booktype methods were verified with DVD Identifier v.5.0.1 They appeared as DVD+R and DVD+R for the Disc and Booktype entries. While the DVD+Rs burned and booktyped with the LG 4167B appeared as DVD+R and DVD-ROM.
Anyway, I guess my 2 options would be to try the hacked FW (once I've verified it adds that feature) or just use the LiteOn booktyping utility. Hacked FW link.

Wow - Nero has been supporting auto booktyping LiteOn drives for a few years now that I know of. (see post below)
Maybe cause it's too new for them (?)
This drive shows as having booktyping capabilities from what I've read.
On my old LiteOn -SOHW832 I set the booktype here - ToolKit>cd-dvd speed>extra>bitsetting. See if you can do it there.
But after you reboot have to do it again.
After this model Nero picked up the auto booktyping on all of them. Think Nero was a little pickier on which models it would auto booktype.
Look at ImgBurn too - by default set to auto booktype. Try that too.
Now I'm very curious on this model - cause I love the auto booktype and would be a bit disappointed.

My LH-18A1P 18x will arrive Friday. I use ImgBurn so I hope the booktype is not going to be an issue. Since most drives recognize dvd media in it's +R or -R state as do set top players, shouldn't a problem if the booktype defaults back from dvd-rom to + / -.

If this is the second drive, I would get the LG. My external 2166D will read discs that 2 benq 1650s can't. A great ripper that has saved my a$$ several times. I have not heard anything good or bad about samsungs.
