I've read through everything I can find in the forums...can't find a problem like mine...y'all seem very helpful, so here goes:
I recently installed Nero 7 Ultra, which includes NVE 4.9.0.18. When using NVE to edit any mpeg, to add chapters, or to burn an image to the HD, NVE abruptly quits - that is, the process simply terminates (now you see it...now you don't!) w/o an opportunity to save a log file (so no, I can't upload one).
This behavior is not consistent. Sometimes it happens when I'm editing, but sometimes I'll get all the way through the editing session. Sometimes it will wink out of existence when I'm adding chapters...sometimes I can work a dozen chapters w/o a problem. Sometimes I can get all the way to burning an image...then 1/2 way through the image it goes poof. Occasionally, I will get a "Error 103", but not always (maybe 1 time in 10).
I have made repeated runs (50 or so) with several different files ranging from 2.4G to 7.3G. The failure seems to be a little more frequent with increasing file size. It also seems to be more common when the system memory allocated is at or below about 160M. The frequency does not seem to be related to the CPU load (NVE 4 always seems to run between 95% and 100% of the CPU...which is much better than NVE 3 did...which is why I wanted the upgrade...)
I have previously run Nero 6 (NVE 3) on this same system w/o any such problems. Reason for upgrade was to take better advantage of a new Athlon X2 4400+ and bump up to dual-channel 2G RAM. (NVE 3 ran just fine on the same chip, just not as efficiently...I got greedy...and, yes, I know that's a sin.)
Here's what I've tried so far to resolve the issue (twice through)
Uninstall Nero 7
run Nero6 general clean tool
run Nero7 general clean tool
run Nero driver clean tool
run Nero Registry clean tool
Re-install Nero 7
I have also tried several different combinations of editing and exporting, then trying to create chapters off the export...same (randomly located) error.
The problem most frequently happens when I am stepping through a file by minutes, seconds, or frames (as, for example, when adding chapters). Intermittent saving while does not seem to change the frequency. (However, the "most frequent" perception may simply be on account of how I haven't been able to get much further than adding chapters w/o playing "where's waldo?" with NVE.)
System:
ASROCK 939Dual-SATA2 (BIOS 1011, if I recall correctly)
430W PSU
Athlon X2 4400+ (no overheating issues, and not overclocked)
2G G-skill RAM (dual channel configured, stock timings)
ATI 9800PRO (a relic by Sapphire, but it works)
5-partition WD250G running off of their (branded) PCI EIDE card (ULTRA TX driver)
3-partition WD160G running off the MOBO
1-partition Seagate 20G running off the MOBO
the OS' 8096 swap file is the only thing on the 20G Seagate; MAX and MIN values are equal
Micro$oft Window$ XP SP2
I can't think of anything else...I'd be very grateful for any help...
Edited 07/02/21 1954 CST: Problem appears to have been solved by uninstalling Nero 7.7.5.1 & installing 7.5.0.9A...have processed 2 large files to completion w/o any problems. Many thanks for the flood of responses...
