I've got a Benq 1655(with Lightscribe) and love it. Looking to obtain another burner but the 1650s and 1655s are no longer being made.

I have a Sony in another machine which was expensive, is very picky, and seems to have "issues" (failing?). Only a year older than the Benq (the Sony's issues the reason I got the Benq) and with about the same amount of usage.

What are ppls recommendations for a moderately priced burner out there that "likes" a wide range of disks? Whats the new Benq like?

I have the same burner as you and a philips 8631 that came with my computer that is a rebadged BenQ 1620! I love my BenQ burners, too. But because of the scarce amount of BenQ drives being offered... and because I see many members having Lite-On drives..... I think that's the way to go! check out the Lite-On scans shown at this thread:

Oops! I just realized I started this thread in the wrong forum.

If the Mods could beam it to the correct one I would appreciate it!

I believe if you check a little closer Meritline is "currently out of stock" on all of its BENQ burners.....

My bad. I just assumed since they were listed, they had them. Newegg doesn't list ones they don't have. I didn't see in red flags either. Too good to be true, by the logic it isn't.

@garmoon
Don't feel bad. I wish your initial assumption was correct. The last time I saw Benqs (1620, 1640, 1650, 1655) was around Christmas at ZipZoomFly. I picked up a 1640 and now I wish I would have gotten at least two or more. Now everytime I see a Benq 16XX series, I have to double check to see if it is in stock..Maybe one of these day...Just dreaming...Happy burning....

Yeah, that's about what I paid for my 1640. I already had a 1650. I think I like the 1640 better...
