Hello,
for at least two years I've had no problems burning dvd's and cd's on my internal Memorex 16+/-DL4RWID2 using Nero. Just the past week I've been getting "pma update failure" when trying to burn cds. with dvd's i get "command sequence error". I did disk cleanup, defrags, updated the firmware. Somehow i can burn cd's again, if i burn at 24x. but still no luck with dvds. I downloaded Cheetah DVD burner to see if it's a problem with Nero, and I got "logical block address out of range" Basically, if you listen to the burner, it seems to be having trouble getting started in the burning process. it seems to be stalling out. you'll hear it rev up for a few seconds and then it stops. eventually it kicks in and seems to be working fine, but after 2 minutes I get the failure messages.. I've tried different media. I just bought a Memorex 50 pack (seems like it'd be very compatible with a memorex burner) and wasn't having any luck with those, so I found a blank Sony disc. IT IS NOT A MEDIA ISSUE. I've tried burning data dvd, video dvds, nothing works at any speeds.. I've wasted at least 15 dvds thus far. Everything was working fine a month ago. I havn't found any helpful info anywheres on the internet. Does anyone have any suggestions? here is my log...

Hi reefis
1st thing edit out the serial # is the log. At the top and begins w/ 1C.
CdRomPeripheral : HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8163B atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : Memorex DVD16+/-DL4RWlD2 atapi Port 1 ID 1 DMA: Off
Turn DMA back on for these drives. Here's a guide - link
Nero Version: 7.0.0.0
Nero can use an update - latest is 7.7.5.1 - may not be part of this problem but several fixes and enhancements since the version you have.
The Memorex you have were made by CMC - not the best but turn DMA back for the drive and see how that goes.
File 'Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS'
Roxio & Nero don't always play well. If still failing may want to try uninstalling Roxio and run the zap tool to remove it all.

thanks for the help. much appreciated
i changed the dma. for some reason, since my burner is a slave drive, dma cannot be turned on, or isn't available. I believe this has always been the case, it's just causes a slower burn. (correct?) it seems very odd that when the burner starts the job is stalls (starts briefly and then stops) at least 4 different times before starting up and stopping after 2 or 3 minutes.. I thought maybe it could be a problem with windows media connect taking up too much memory, so i uninstalled that and then nothing... i'm am trying to figure out if CDRALW2K.SYS' has anything to do with it.
I need your guidance

How about the DVD-Rom drive - were you able to turn DMA on for that one?
Since your hard drive is in DMA - as faster data transfer rate then the slow PIO mode it could cause problems & failures. Slowness being one of them.
Manually change transfer mode in the drop down to 'dma if available' for each one in the seconardy channel then uninstall the ide channel again and reboot.
You mighthave a bad ide cable & that might be the reason for staying in PIO and possibly the burn failures.
For the Roxio if you've had in installed all this time then it may not be the problem.
Might want to rule it out anyhow but need to get the drive back in DMA mode too.
Oh and you're welcome!

yes, i WAS able to turn DMA on for my dvd-rom drive. I'll open up my computer tommorow and see what's up, I might as well make my burner my master anyway. Do wires ever unattach or burnout?

They can - unfortunately nothing lasts forever :)
But switch it to master & see how that goes- change the jumper pins on the back of the drives too - dvd-rom will now be set to slave & burner to master.
Keep us posted!

hello, i did the latter, and turned dma on. I think it IS A MEDIA issue because I got a successful burn with a Sony DVD-R at 6x. with the crappy memorex branded DVD-R it failed again. (this time i had a "reset error" ?). here's the log for that specific burn if you can find anything else fishy. I noticed that my buffer size is only 2 mb. that doesn't seem right to me. is it?

Yeah it could definitely be a media issue - the memorex you have are made by CMC - not very good.
Plus the firmware for this drive hasn't been updated since mid 2005 so some 16x media will more than likely give it problems (like these).
The drive is actually a oem LiteOn SOHW-1673S so you could also try crossflashing the drive to the LiteOn firmware. You would need to use the patched on for the LiteOn SOHW 1693S - KSOB. Here's a link if interested - link
The 2mb buffer on the drive is pretty standard - you're good there.

DUDE!! you kick ass. you solved my problems 100%! It used to take an hour to burn a dvd and now it's 7 minutes. I was able to burn the CMC DVD-R at 16x. no problems at all. Nero infotool even says i can read AND write bd-r. that can't be true, can it? wow. thank you so much!

lol - not a problem reefis :)
I take it you cross flashed to the LiteOn and that did the trick.
Though it won't have given the drive the ability to read & write to BluRay (check box will be to the right of BD-R). The LiteOn doesn't support it.
I'd take the CMC back down to 8x too - don't need any more coasters :)
And these can be iffy enuf as it is.
Happy Burning!
