ok i have a 6 yr old dell laptop and an external hp dvd drive. before i was using the 1.1 usb connection even though the drive is 16x with 2.0 well i just bought a usb 2.0 pci card bus and when i try to burn it freezes up Nero and i can do anything with the pc. drivers are updated for the burner and ide chanels are on dma. any suggestions or someone to help me resolve this issue its taking me an hour and a half to burn right now. HELP

Seriously, there are no problems. It's doing very well (like me) despite it's age, There are certain things you can do to speed things up a little though. Try overclocking the cpu (mildly in this case), and/or increasing your Ram capacity. It may well be prudent to think of a total change in machines. A second hand desk top if funds are tight perhaps?
