I put a bunch of videos on a Hitachi 2.5 external HD for storage to redo my PC using XP Pro. After I finished,I connected the external back to my pc and tried to transfer the files back to an internal hd off the external. 20 of the files transferred with no problem. 5 files refuse to move from the external. There is an error message stating "invalid MS-DOS function" You see the files begin to try and transfer but near the middle of it I get that error message for all 5 files. How can I fix this to get these files off the external and onto the internal? Thanks.

are you able to burn them onto a CD making a Data CD then you may be able to. Aldo possibly you could copy and paste them rather than transfer
Without knowing what the files are it is hard to tell why they will not transfer

OK...it won't let me copy and paste (INVALID MS-DOS FUNCTION)
OK...it won't let me cut and paste (INVALID MS-DOS FUNCTION)
It won't even allow me to burn them to a CD or DVD. (BURN PROCESS FAILED)
They are just plain music videos. With .avi and .mpeg extensions.
Remember 20 of them transferred over with no problem. It's just the last five won't budge. They play fine on the external, but they just won't move from it.

simple try encoding the files to ure desktop using Nero,win AVI,imtoo mpg whatver prgm u use

Sounds like the files are sitting on corrupted clusters. Try doing a scandisk to repair. Then try transferring them again.

If the above works, format the drive a few times just to be safe for the next time.

OK...."chkdsk /r" did the job. It did have a lot of bad clusters that the files were sitting on. I got all the files off now. Thanks all!!
