I have been getting the dreaded "power calibration error" every time I go to burn a dvd. It is still working fine for cd - have tried everything - different media, cleaning the writer, disabling the IMAPI thingee, updating to the latest version of Nero 6, everything I can think of, and followed the advice in other forum threads regarding this problem. I'm fed up!
Any alternative burners you can recommend - I only need something for dvd files.
Thanks!!

I am also at the point to where I am looking or alternatives. Just looking to condense and burn DVD files I have ripped into my computer (via dvd decryptor).

- can anyone recommend a good program??

Try Shrink and ImageBurn. A terrific free combination.
ImageBurn here:

does the image burn program "condense" ripped in dvd files to fit onto a normal 4.7 DVD-R disk?

Shrink compresses the file to fit 4.7 DVD. ImgBurn will burn the ISO file that Shrink can create. Your burner may on the way out. How old is it? Can you try it in another pc? If you're doing newer movies you'll need something to get past DRMs, because Shrink, or for that matter, Nero can't handle.

My burner is only a year or so old - I am able to burn discs very occasionally, but mostly get the "power calibration error".
Thought ImgBurn might be the way to go, so I tried creating image in Nero, then burning with ImgBurn, but I get a power calibration problem with this too...
Does this sound like I need a new burner?? Any other tips I can try??

My computer has been running a bit unstable lately, would a clean windows install be a possibility for a fix, or do you think this will make no difference?

Ok - followed directions and installed other version of Nero - still no go.
Memory usage is still really high - but that's just running Nero, I can't figure out how to cut it down any further.

Haven't got access to other media at the moment, but in the past I have never had any probs with these TDK ones.

It just seems to have happened all of a sudden - I have a BTC DVDRW IDE 16X cheapie writer - it still burns cd discs fine, just not dvd.
I haven't experienced any problems untill the past few days.

Here is the new log since cleaning system and reinstalling:

I am not sure but I think this may be your burner here, if so then do firmware update.

Your memory usage is being used up by something other than Nero. How many programs are running in the bottom right of your taskbar (beside the clock?)

In the bottom right I have icons for ZoneAlarm, AVG antivirus, Norton A/V, & that's all. Usually the OpenOffice Quickstart is there, but I closed that before I tried the last burn.
When I check the processes in the Task Manager, it says I have about 18,000K of memory available (that's without Nero running) but still, seems like it should be enough... then somehow when I burn it all disappears
afterdawn.com > forums > software specific discussion > nero discussion > i'm fed up with nero! alternatives???
