I'm looking to buy a onyx ds lite what should i need to know before i buy? Are the ds like the psp's where you need a special firmware version to be able to play backups?

No. Almost all mods to the DS are hardware based and not firmware. If you buy an M3 or R4 you don't need to do anything but buy the M3/R4 and a microSD card. That's it. Very easy.

I have a 1GB card and can fit about 20 roms on it.

If you have a lot of bigger roms then you could probably fit 10-15 on a 1GB.

Roms range in size from 8mb-128mb.

You can usually find torrents of the roms you need a copy of.

I think I did a search on Torrentz.com

Just search for nds roms and sort by size.

For roms, torrents suck.
Sites for roms:
Drn.dl.am
dgemu.com
frozen-roms.net

The r4 costs about 40.00 on gameyeeeah.com and 45.00 on divineo.net
