I have a DVD9 burner in my computer, and it REFUSES to burn data to a DVD or DVD9. When I use Sonic Recordnow, I get this message:

When I try to burn it with Windows XP, it also states there is no disc in the drive. WHAT THE....?

I'm attempting to use a dual layered DVD. I have now tried 3 different DVD9 discs, and gotten this same message.

Did I mention it works just fine with any ordinary CD?

I also get a similar error with Nero 7, ultimate edition. Actually, it doesn't give me an error. It burns the whole thing, then refuses to play it in any DVD player in my house or any of the 4 DVD drives in any of my computers.

If it works OK with CDs, but not with DVDs, very possibly it has a faulty laser head. Will it write successfully to any kind of dvd? If the drive is still under warranty, contact your dealer for advice.

Try updating your firware for your DVD drive, it doesn't recognise that type of disk.

If you can't update via HP, try and see what type of drive hey use and go from there.

I haven't had this problem but read about many members here saying that when a drive can't burn DVDs and only seems to burn CDs..... it's time for a new burner! This is what I heard around the forums. But, I would definitely try to update the firmware so it might recognize the disks.
how old is the computer? and what are the disks you are trying to use? what's the model # of that HP burner? answer these questions and then I can point you in the right direction to find out if your burner is shot or if it's just a firmware update you need!

I have tried both DVD+R discs and DVD-R discs, and it is refusing to burn or recongize either.

It came with my HP a867c. It has an HP DVD writer 640b. It reads DVDs for games and movies (Oblivion, for example) but refuses to burn to them.
