I am considering getting a LaCie 500gig external hard drive w/usb2.0 connection, 7200 rpm. Cnet gave them very good reviews, i found it for under $200. I read elsewhere that they are not very good. Does anyone have any experience with LaCie?

No, personally i always buy brands i know and trust like Western Digital, Seagate and Maxtor.
