First of all, this thread in no way encourages or even tolerates the unlawful downloading of copyrighted materials. No specific sites or anything, please -- general discussion only.

Do I understand that most piracy scrutiny is leveled on users who share copyrighted data rather than download it per se? Obviously, the whole basis of bittorrent is simultaneously uploading what you acquire, not to mention the "shared" folders in programs like Limewire and eMule. So it makes sense that those p2p methods are being attacked.

But what about users who download from newsgroups without ever posting anything themselves? That still amounts to acquiring content which you may or may not be entitled to possess, but is it currently beyond the scope of industry scrutiny? I know that a few newsgroup services themselves have received warnings (and maybe some prolific individual uploaders), but what about the rest of the users who simply pay to access the newsgroups in whatever manner they chose?

Is that going to be the "next step" in the war against piracy?

Newsgroups are already being watched/monitored. Newzbin as well as a few other newsgroup indexing sites (nzb sites) were involved in some investigation or whatnot not too long ago.

Unlike other P2P networks, newsgroups dont actually connect user to user thus making it harder to track/monitor. you'd hafta fist trace the original post, locate the poster's info and try going after the poster. as for the content itself, the poster could post the content to many different newsgroup servers thus making tracking even harder.

So anyway, sooner or later the Man is gunna put the screws to newsgroups in some form or another
