Hello all,
I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop with a DVD R/RW drive and I am having some problems making backups of dvd's. I checked with Nero to see what my specs were on this drive and it is a [1:0]D:\_Nec DVD+-RW ND-6500A drive. Firmware version: 202C. It says it supports DVD-R burning, but whenever I put in my blank Maxell DVD-R 4.7GB 16x 2 hr DVD-R disk, I get an error with Nero saying ILLEGAL DISC. Could not perform start of Disc-at-once. Burn failed. Any help would be very much appreciated. Is it a firmware issue or something, I thought I ran a program that said I had the latest firmware but I'm unsure.
Thank you

Hello Moon18
The latest firmware for this drive from Dell is 203E.

The illegal disc error you get usually means the media isn't supported by the firmware.
So update it and see how that goes.

Hey,
thank you for the response binkie, but I am still getting that same error. I updated my firmware to the latest version you gave me, but still get that ILLEGAL DISC error. Its doing this in DVD Shrink and Nero. Anyone else have any other suggestions? Thank you

My next suggestion would be to use different media.
Maxell uses different manufacturers and some not that good or compatible w/ the different drives and the firmware.
If you get Maxell look for made in Japan only.

Others to try that are good would be Taiyo Yuden (can buy online from a reputable store), Verbatim or made in Japan Sony or Fuji.

You can also post the last Nero log and we can take a peek and see if anything else is amiss.
Just be sure to edit out the serial # - begins w/ 1A, 1C or 5C.
You can find them here:
Nero 6 - program files>ahead>nero>nerohistory
Nero 7 - program files>nero>nero 7>nerohistory.

It's a text file and the logs are separated by something like this:
======***Nero Burning Rom History***=====

Here is the log I got when I got the error. I'm not sure what you meant about editing those sections out. Thank you for this help Binkie, I appreciate it.

Not a problem Moon18

You got the edit part - you editted the serial # from Nero. So you're ok.

The Maxell you have a made by Ritek - usually decent stuff but I still leaning to this manufacturer not being supported by the firmware.

Burn process failed at 2.4x
Is this the highest speed Nero will let you burn these at? If so that's the default speed when the media isn't supported by the firmware.

You can give another burning program a shot - it's free and good - ImgBurn.
To burn the video files you would use the build mode.
I still think you might get the same error though.

Are these Maxell the only discs that have given you problems?

I'm actually new to all of this, and they are the only DVD-R's that I have bought. I appreciate your help, and will try that ImgBurn thing. I cant understand why these discs wouldnt work, I bought a 30 pack of them , so looks like I'm out 12 dollars or so if they wont work :-/ Ill try that Img burn and let you know what happens. Thanks again

Hey, IMGburn gave me the same deal. Cannot write to medium. Is it just my computer or something that won't let these discs write, or can anyone write to them?

yeah I kinda thought ImgBurn might fail too but worth a shot.
Good to have another burning program just in case.

I still think it's the firmware of the drive not supporting the Ritek.
I've seen these fail in quite a few logs - sometimes a firmware helped - sometimes it didn't. Switching media usually fixed it.
So try the ones listed above.

I've used them and on my drives they burned fine but that not the case for all drives.

Can you exchange/return them? I would try to since they don't work.

Oh no now Sony's are failing.

Ok let's try a few more things.

What is the max burn speed Nero will give you on these discs when you go to burn them & the Maxell's?

Go to control panel>administrative tools>services
Scroll down to IMAPI CD-Burning. Double click on it. If this service is started - stop it (has been known to cause problems). Start up type can be set to manual.

Wen burning close all unneeded programs and no multitasking.
The log above had 66% memory is use so okay there but let's try and rule out any other conflicts.

Have you been keeping up on the pc maintenance bit? May not solve this but is very good to do on a regular basis to keep the pc running smooth.
This would include - disc defrag, running a registry cleaner like the free ccleaner. Use the issues and cleaner options. And last but not least virus scans.

it keeps only burning at like 2.4x on both of the medias. I dont think it even burns anything just tries to start ,doesnt work then stops.

I ran that Ccleaner and tried everything you said and still getting same error. This is so frustrating, seemingly trying everything with no results. I feel as if one of these DVD-r's should have worked and am thinking something is going on with the hardware aspect.. any more suggestions greatly appreciated.
thank you

The 2.4x speed again leans towards not fully recognized by the drive.
Looks like burns fails in about a minute so may have tried to write. If it did you can see a difference in color - might small since the 1 min thing.
But now your hitting 2 out of 2.

I know laptop burners tend to be pickier w/ media (mine and my friends differently are!) But i hate to say at this point new media again.
I was trying to find something from Dell on what brands should be supported by this drive but they had a ton of different ones. And I'm not really sure I would find one.

There troubleshooting guide was worthless.

Now I see a lot of problem posts on this same drive in dell's community forum. Some mentioned Maxell, Sony 16x fail but mainly saying 8x media was fine 16x wasn't working. Just glanced through a few though.
Here's a link to all of them (a ton actually) - link
I don't know how much would be useful.

I'd still do the suggestions in my post above but add to that to check for any updated for this laptop. Dell might have a desktop shortcut to do this or you can check dell's site with the model of your laptop.

Give those a go and keep us posted!

Sorry missed your post - before I slowly typed my last one (was looking thru dell's site)

Just checking - check the IMAPI CD Burning too?

Rebooted after updating the firmware? (more than likely did cause the new version is showing in the log)

On last thing to try - uninstall the drive - can't hurt.
Right click on my computer. Go to properties then hardware then device manager.
Click the + next to ata/atapi ide controller.
Right click on the secondary ide channel and pick uninstall.
Now reboot - windows will do it's thing and reinstall.

You can try scanning thru the problem thread at dell's forum but I think my next call would be to DELL - tech support if all this fails. (check for updates on this laptop 1st too)

Let me know what they say - curious - cause we just ran through all the basics that should do the trick.

Hey binkie, do you have AIM or anything like that I could ask you a couple additional questions? I feel like we are the only ones talking back and forth here and maybe we could get this figured out on AIM or something. Thank you

Well I'm getting ready to sign off for the night (after midnight here & work in the am - yuck!)

Best best would be to post them in the thread. That's probably best cause someone else may stop in and have answers for you. But I'll be back tomorrow night.

I'll stick with this trying to get it resolved.

well finally success! The only brand of DVD-R that I can write to on my crappy NEC drive is Verbatim. They work well and I have burned successfully. Thank you for your help binkie. btw, SONY, Memorex, and Maxell did not work. They all failed on my drive :-/
Glad I found a 50 pack of Verbatim DVD-R's for 15 dollars at office max! :)

Yea success!!
Verbs are good stuff and they go on sale pretty often - like 50 for around $15.

Another great brand that should work on this drive is Taiyo Yuden. You can get them online at supermediastore.com.
I use them a lot on a few different drives.

Oh and you're welcome!
