NEED HELP WITH CD-R/RW DRIVE...WOULD NOT WORK!!!

HELP! All of a sudden my cd-r drive on my laptop won't work. It does not not eject and I do not see it's icon in the "My Computer" anymore. As if the whole harddrive dissapeared! I see the disc lamp is lit though. I was taught how to eject the thing by poking the small hole but that does not help at all coz the whole thing would just not work... I couldnt burn CDs or watch DVDs. I need some advise on why this happened or maybe if there is something I can do to fix it before I take it to the repair shop and get ripped off... thanx guys for any help or advise!!
