What media do I buy, DVD-R or DVD+R to set Neros to booktype DVD-ROM? I want to fake the DVD player to think that my media is a real store bought DVD-ROM disc.

+R media can be booktyped to DVD-ROM. Some players however prefer DVD-R media. Try both to see which gives you the better results.

If you want to booktype, your burner must support this and you must use +R DVDs. DVD-Rs cannot be booktyped. If you have DVD Decrypter you can check if your drive can booktype.

What do the older DVD players prefer?

I have an older Daewoo DVD, a newer Toshiba combo TV-DVD, and a fairly new Toshiba DVD. They all play +Rs booktyped to DVD-ROMs. Chinese players will play a pizza. LOL I haven't burned 5 -R discs in 3.5 years.

Older players prefer older movies,
(Just kidding)
I have a 6 year old Philips which only likes 4x DVD+R media, or any DVD-R media. I only use DVD-R now due to that fact. I have a $29.99 Toshiba which will play anything I throw at it. So, the DVD-R might be the best bet for your older player.
See, different things work for different people.
