NEC Drive won't read DVD's

I just bought the NEC ND-1000 (DVD +R/RW), and I dropped it on my system (XP op). I have put 8 DVD's on this drive, and it does not recognize them. It asks me to drop a DVD in and there is one already in. I put a CD in the drive and it see it. Has anybody else had this problem before? Can you tell me how to get around this.
