Problem with Nero - Burn error right before completion

This has been happening consistently over the past week, wasting me many DVDs now. Here's the info:
I use RipIt4Me, DVD Decryptor, FixTS and DVD Shrink. I burn using Sony blank DVDs, which has been fine for the past year or so. What happens is that it starts burning and gets all the way to the end before it gives me a burn error.

Reduce the trage size in Shrink to 4360 or 4300 - won't be burning close to the edge - may help.
Can find anything on the drive to see if there is a newer firmware version that may help. Check the manufacturer of the laptop and see if they have one.
Have the Sony you've been using all been 16x media? Or did the drive do better w/ 8x? Sony is usually good stuff - either made by Sony themself or Taiyo Yuden.
I still try some different media though too - to rule it out. Look for Verbatim.
Try burning w/ Decrypter instead of Nero w/ Shrink and see what happens. In select backup target pick 'iso image file and burn w/ decrypter'.
Try upping the burn to 4x if you haven't tried that already.

I followed your suggestions but I'm still having trouble burning. Here's more info and an update:
1. Mashita UJ-830S I have doesn't have a firmware update.
2. I've been using Sony 1-16x all along. I was near the end of a 50-DVD stack before it stopped burning. I opened a near stack of 100-DVD and those didn't work either. I've been using the same Sony brand of DVDs for ages and they've never given be trouble.
3. For some reason, the drive only burns at 2x speed even though it's suppose to go up to 16x. I think that's always been a problem, not just with my drive but with others. It's the crappy Mashita I think.
4. I tried reducing the size to 4360 and 4000 and it still didn't work.
5. I also tried using ImgBurn. That didn't work either.
6. With both Nero and ImgBurn, the drive starts burning and always stops towards the end. That makes me think it isn't a hardware problem, but is it possible that it is? If so, my Toshiba's still under warranty and I can get them to replace it.
7. Here's the log for my Nero burn attempt when I reduced the burn size to 4360:

That's odd that the drive will only go 2x on these - usually means the media isn't supported by the firmware though the default speed in that case for most burners is 2.4x but we're talking Matshita here. (the max burn speed on this drive is 8x)
I have a Matshita too (different model) in my laptop and will hit 8x though I only use 8x media in it since mine doesn't always seem to like 16x. Not my favorite burner by far.
It could be the drive itself on the way out. Laptop drives imho aren't as good as their pc counterparts.
To rule out the drive though the other dvd from the 100 pack - are they Sony's also? If they are you might just want to try different media.
You also have this in both logs (KEY_HARDWARE_ERROR).
Now does that always been it's the drive - no - media could be another cause for this also.
Anything change pc wise since this started happening?
Keeping up on the pc maintenance like registry cleaner, disc cleanup & defrag and virus scans?

I just did a disk defrag, registry cleanup, and spyware scan. Tried burning again, no luck. I've been using the same Sony brand.
Tomorrow I'll try some other ones. Do you all have any recommendations? I've heard Verbatim's reliable. Any objections?
I'll let you know what happens with the new brand. In the mean time I'll post the latest failed burn below.

my thoughts,
before this started happening were u always burning the Sony's at 2x and had no problems?
r those sonys rated at 8x speed?
try verbatims and if u have a problem with them i think u have to lean towards the burner being the problem.

Yeah I'm still leaning towards the burner too if the Verbs don't work but could be wrong.
The log is showing the same errors as the others.
Bad thing about laptop burners is they're a little harder to put in another laptop to check and see if it's the drive.
Have you tried burning any thing else on dvd's besides movies?
May just want to try burning a few gigs of data and see how that goes.
Oh and no problem on the help ;)

A friend gave me a Nexxtech blank to try, and it burned fine. Soooo now what? I used to use Nexxtech but that gave me some problems I think, so I changed to Sony, which has been fine up until now.
Does this conclusively show it's somehow the Sony blank disks that are the problem?

Conclusively - unfortunately no. If the drive is on it's way out you may still get some good burns.
After you burn a few more Nexxtech or Verbs then maybe. Nexxtech uses different manufacturers - some by iffy manufacturers so that's why you could have had a problem with them.

Try uninstalling the drive from the device manager, reboot and see if it still does it. Windows will reinstall your drive with fresh drivers.Also might want to reinstall the burning program. If you still get errors restore back to a date before you started having the trouble. Use Verbatim . If it still dosnt work your drive is Nuked

I called Toshiba tech support, who suggested I do a system restore, except when I did, to about three weeks ago, it wouldn't let me. It'd reboot and then say something like "unable to restore your computer" or something. What's that all about?

Does Toshiba give you one of those 'total care' things like HP? They may have one at there site - it's a web utility that does a system check on all components.
You might want to try that.
But I'm thinking the drive may still be on it's last legs.

Sorry for the lack of updates. I haven't seen the total care thing, and the tech support person didn't suggest it. She suggested doing a system restore but when I tried it gave me an error message.

Some temporary good news. I successfully burnt a project using a TDK disk. The log is below. BTW, I noticed that the past few times I restarted my laptop, it would take me to a screen that says "Please choose your operating system". I don't know how long this has been doing this 'cause I don't restart my computer often, and I don't know if this has anything to do with the burn problems. (BTW, my Windows copy is authentic).
Also, in other weird news, the friend's blank Nexxtech burned at 8x (successful burn), my Nexxtech burned at 2x (failed burn), and my TDK burned at 2x (successful burn), even though they're all supposed to be 1-16x.

I see locoeng gotcha in the thread you started. Best to start a new one anyhow - can get a bit confusing with all the different logs ;)

Yeah I think you have something funky going on w/ the pc - can't do a system restore and rebooting gives you that message.
It's best not to keep the pc running all the time - cold reboots are good to do.
I think you're best option now is to reformat. Start with a clean slate. Still have burning problems then would be the drive but it should fix the other issues.
You'll just need to backup whatever you want b/4 reformatting.
Looks like you have 2 hard drives - if ones a storage move whatever you want to keep there.

I just burned another DVD successfully with the TDK disks so, not sure what's up with that. Either way, a reformat sounds like a good idea. That was what the Toshiba tech person suggested too.
Do I need to call them to walk me through, or is this something I can do myself?

Hello all (Binkie, I see you still peruse these boards). I haven't been around a while, and I had tons of issues with the Nero Program & errors (burn failure at line 276, etc, etc). I got to thinking, has anyone set their computer back to factory specs? I have too much stuff on my computer, and it would take way to long to update everything again. But my thought it maybe one of the updates (windows, virus programs, etc) may be casing Nero and my burner to not function as before? And no one had figured it out yet. Has anyone tried this with any success?

That's what the Toshiba person suggested, setting it back to factory specs. It seems such a pain, but I might do it. Although, oddly enough, it seems to be burning the TDK disks without problem.

You could do it by yourself - kinda tedious and you need to backup anything you want to keep cause a reformat will 'wipe' the drive and you do a reinstall of the os. So you'll need the original XP disc that came with the pc.
I can try and look for a guide on the net if you like.
If it's burning TDK's right now then keep going with them. The TDK's you're using are made by CMC so they may end up giving you problems too.

Every pc is different - meaning different drivers/ programs etc. So what may work for one may not work for another.
Have you tried another burning program to rule out Nero?

I restored my laptop to factory conditions, reinstalled Nero, and tried to burn on my Sony DVDs...AND IT WORKED! Thank you all soooo much for helping out. I'll burn more to make sure it wasn't a fluke but regardless, I still appreciate your help.
If I'm not back for a week, you can assume my problem has been fixed for now.
