Hi guys,

I, like so many other users, am getting the illegal disc error when attempting to burn a DVD. I just upgraded my firmware, got the Nero updates, and even tried another burning program (ImgBurn 2.3.0.0) - all with no success. DMA is on.

Things were working fine before today, but it's a new spindle of DVD's (BenQ 16x DVD-R). I'm guessing I purchased the 'wrong' brand. I'm running a Dell D610 with an NEC ND-6650A drive. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Log below. Thanks!

your version of Nero 6 is not the stablest version.... 6.6.0.18 is the most stablest version of Nero 6 and I would update it to that version. Here's how:

Before udating to 6.6.0.18 I would save the serial #, uninstall Nero, then use the cleaning tools : http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/eng/Clean_Tools.html
then do a registry clean up(free registry cleaner, CClean: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/downloadpage.aspx?1) and defrag...... then reboot!

install package one:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_nero_burning_rom/?539

then install package two:
http://www.nero.com/nero6/eng/Patch_for_NVE3.html
reboot and you're good to go!

also I would use better media. Stick with the MIJ rule (Made In Japan). Look for the MIJ on the label of the box of spindle (Taiyo Yuden, Sony, Maxell, and some Fuji)... the only exception to this rule is Verbatim, which is top notch media but made in Taiwan/Singapore and the only non MIJs I will use. That's why you got this:
Illegal disc with this crappy media Recorder: _NEC DVD+-RW ND-6650A, Media type: DVD-R

burning too slowly is just as bad as burning too fast! Burn at 4x - 8x! Using better media will allow you to pick these burn speeds.

Quote:
Last possible write address on media: 2298495 (510:46.45, 4489MB)
Last address to be written: 2286095 (508:01.20, 4465MB)

you are burning too close to the edge of the disk using crappy media! Adjust this to no more than 4400MB and some members even adjust this lower to 4300MB. But, if you're using quality media burning at 4400MB should be no problem!

this is a Roxio/Sonic driver that interferes with Nero burning DVDs! uninstall Roxio/Sonic programs when having problems with Nero! then use the Roxio zapper to make sure everything is out of your computer:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml

try these recommendations and you'll get better results!

Thanks for the response, but still no joy.

I uninstalled, cleaned, defragged, and installed the Nero version suggested, but still got the same error. I did not install the patch though as the FTP server has been down for at least 12 hours. Will continue to try throughout the day.

I know I found it with my previous version of Nero, but I can't seem to adjust the drive speed up. It is set to 'maximum', yet still tries to burn at the lower speed. Perhaps it detects poor media? I also lowered the file size so that I'm only burning 4GB.

Any suggestions or wait until the patch becomes available? I am burning DVD video files. Thanks.

Hi guys..another "Illegal Disc" issue..sorry! I read a 13 page thread earlier then a fiver a little while back.. Still have a question though if someone might have some time to throw at it. Trying to simply burn a DVD-ISO with Nero of a couple of .avi files I have. Only using like 3300Mb on the compilation. I use it in a DVD player I have that processes DivX so I don't need to spend time encoding things to dvd, just toss the AVI on a blank and watch it in the living room..until now. I have been doing this for three years now. I know I probably have crappy media, but I bought a spindle of 100 and I can't believe my drive won't even attempt to burn to one of them. I have tried several. I don't need the disc to last even the evening, just burn successfully. Here's my log if you see anything...

btw, because of reading your older threads, I'm up to the newest firmware on my NEC drive..newest Nero..etc.. Okay, enough talk, here's the log..

@sublimewb.......your NEC drive is now 3 yrs old with no more firmware updates. If you bought a spindle of newer media that it doesn't recognize then I would bring it back and get some media that did work for your drive!
Quote:
I have been doing this for three years now
then I would continue to do it the same way with the same media that you always used. Get rid of the newer media because it won't work on your drive because your drive needs a firmware update to try to burn newer media and there isn't any! Either go back to the old media that you've been using and were successful with or get a newer drive to burn the newer media out there!

Is it possible to use a third party firmware..or to update the drive myself in some way to recognize new media? I understand its three years old, but I would hate to have to buy a new burner every time a few years goes by and someone finds a way to make new blanks. What company supports their drives with firmware updates the longest? NEC looks to be about two years which seems very short and hard on the consumer.

hey don't ask me..... I just bought my BenQ 1655 last year and they are not producing any more DVD burners so they won't be updating the firmware again. soooooo because of that and my burner being fairly new I am stockpiling my blank DVDs that work great with my BenQ 1655...... I have about 450 Taiyo Yuden disks now just waiting to be burned! LOL and every week I buy more!

sublimewb,
I bought a NEC-1300 about 4+ years ago and like IHOE stated no new firmware. Nec had the firmware for about 2 1/2 years for that burner which is really long. When the new media comes out some companies will update the firmware for a short while but then stop w/ the updates. This is their way of telling you if you want to use the faster blank media then you will have to buy another burner. Both Meritline.com and NewEgg.com have either Pioneer or NEC burners for a little over $30.00 US.

You can forget trying to find firmware for that burner from a 3rd party as I looked before I gave the burner to a charity.

@sublimewb......when wasn't a companies bottom line NOT meant anything!? All companies out there are meant to do business and make money. If after a couple of years you can get the customer to buy again and spend more money....... then you have a profitable company! Just ask Microsoft and how many times Gates makes changes to Windows!!!! Soooooooo get used to big business making us comsumers buy again and again for the same things!

Sooooooo what drive are you going to get???

Well, I just picked up 10pack of 4x discs from a local pharmacy..on the back shelf covered with dust.. haha.. I probably go through ten in three or four days, so I am going to need that drive soon. Any DVD burners come with the lightscribe ability that anyone knows of? I recently saw a friend who had an HP CD burner that could label CD's..would be nice to have a DVD burner that could do that, beats my horrible handwriting with the sharpie (and I'm too cheap to waste ink on labels unless its going to a friend or family member)...

fleeze,
Your burner is a little old and w/ the newer blank media the firmware on the burner is really not understanding how to write to the blank media. Since this is a laptop burner you can replace it but since the burner is 3+ years old you might just want to replace the laptop. You laptop is seeing this disk as an Illegal disk.

Also you need to cutoff all unneeded processes that you are not using as you only have 109MB left in memory to use out of 512MB

Car.Mike,

Do you have any suggestions about what to get or where to get an updated drive?

fleeze,
The easiest way for you would be to go to a MOM and POP Computer store in your town and see what they recommend. If you have never installed a drive in your laptop then you will have to pay someone to do it. If you can find them Pioneer, NEC, and LG make pretty good ones. You might also look at Meritline.com and see what they have to offer.
