I've been using tis burner for about 6 months without any problems until today. I can't get anything to burn with any program. I also tried playing a dvd and the picture and sound were skipping really bad. This is the error log I got when I tried to use Nero. Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi DomRock
1st thing edit out your serial numbers - begin w/ 1A in the middle of the log. Don't need someone else using them.
Direct burning: true
Turn off burn at once. let Nero encode 1st saving the file temporarily then it will start the burn.
All your drives show DMA off but since you have Nvidia Nero doesn't report your transfer mode correctly. Just in case check DMA mode to make sure on in device manager for your drives.

Update the firmware - latest is 1.0f
File 'Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS':
Nero and Roxio don't always play well so if the above doesn't do the trick you can uninstall Roxio and run the zap tool.

Hi Binkie, thank you for your assistance. I had already ckecked for DMA, and it is on. I updated the firmware. I had checked that through the device manager yesterday and it had told me I had the most current version before, so that is odd. After updating the firmware, I got the same results. After encoding the files, it says burn process started, then just sits for a few minutes and says write error.

I have also tried using DVDShrink and DVD Fab with the same results. I haven't changed anything on my pc, and I don't think it's the disks, since I have successfully burned several from this same package.
What is roxio? I have never heard of that before. I can't find it anywhere on my pc to unistall.

Roxio is another burning program similar to Nero. The Roxio driver (Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS) is used by a couple of other programs - I think one is WinAmp.
If nothing has changed pc wise this may not be an issue.
Take the burn speed down to 8x - this log has 16x - and see if that makes a diff.
It may end up being the Sony discs. They're usually good but have ended up in quite a few failed burn logs lately and switching to another brand did the trick.
So if lowering the burn speed doesn't do it I would definitely try other discs - like Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.

No luck at 8x either. I've already burned several dvd's with these same disks, so I don't think that would be the issue. I'm really at a loss here.

Ok - here's what Nero has on the power calibration - 1st 2 causes are firmware or media - but this would be typical for any program that gave a power calibration error. The ref's to cd hold true for DVD also.
Another thing to add on top of this would be cleaning the lens of the dvd with either dvd lens cleaner or blowing some canned air in the burner.
[i]Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.
Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).
This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.
If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (amost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.
Please try the following solutions:
* Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.
* Try another brand of CD-R or CD-RW media.
* Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.
* Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
* Send the recorder in for service.
