Actually, most likely just your media. Forget what I said before writing this post, lol. Try experimenting with different media.

My bad. I should have been more specific. Media as in blank media. It works incredibly well with my Taiyo yuden dvd+rs'. Your burn program should be alright although if you really want to, you could try using Nero or IMGBurn.

It also depends what PS2 you have, and I don't think you mentioned what was yours and what was his? By any chance you have an old fat PS2 while your friend's PS2 is a slim? It's preferable if you used DVD-R instead on olddies for most cases.

Btw, providing as much information as you can, can help speed up this process and fixing your situation as soon as possible instead of us going back and forth like this. Also, I really don't recommend those hpdvd+rs' you are using, especially with the slim PS2s. You are only going to foul your laser up more and exponentially decrease its life expentency. Don't say you haven't been warned. But of course, I found out the hard way with Memorex, Fujifilm, and the Sony DVD+RWs' I've use to use before.

I still recommend switching media. I still remember trying to play my copy of Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria on my silver, slim PS2 but had no luck at all even starting it without hearing crunching noises. I playtested it on my friend's old fat PS2, and it worked but not without problems. That old copy was on a Memorex. Switched to a Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden disc, I forgot, and now I can even play VP:S on my silver, slim PS2. Also, result vary on a few things depending what game you are trying to play.
