I know that if an original DVD is less than 4.3 gig you can rip it as an .iso and burn. I find that many DVD's are larger than 4.3 gig but when I rip just the main movie, the resulting VOB's and IFO is less than 4.3 gig.

Trouble is, I use DVDDecrypter in IFO mode to rip only the main VOB's and one IFO. The original DVD has some Video_TS.xxx files (xxx = VOB, IFO, and BUP) I assume that these files have to be on a DVD-R to play it on a set top player and therefore I can't just burn the mian movie files that DVDDecrypter ripped? True?

If not, can I just do a second rip in DVDDecrypter's file mode to get the 3 Video_TS.xxx files to the hard drive and then burn the all files that resulted from both rips? Or do these VideoTS.xxx files contain information that is invalidated when I ripped only the main movie since files associated with the menu and extras would be gone?

Ok,

If all you want to do is just copy the movie with no menus, then you can get away with
just the main VOB's and the .IFO file. At least this will fit on the DVD!

All you'd have to do is

1) open IFOedit, open the VTS_01_1.IFO file, go to VOB extras

2) make sure "correct VOB unit" and "correct IFO tables" are checked off, as well as
"create new VIDEO_TS and VTS_01_0.IFO files".

3) Change the destination directory with a new directory within the folder that your movie files are. (You should name the directory VIDEO_TS) By changing the directory, you will have a completed movie, and all neccesary files to work with, once your done recreating your VOB's and IFO's

4) Select "Strip streams" so that you can eliminate other languages from your DVD-R,
as you probably won't need the spanish AC3...

5) Hit the OK button, and select the needed streams and subtitles. I usually uncheck the subtitles near the bottom, and select the AC3 6 channel soundtrack stream.

6) It will create new VOB's and new IFO files, and place them in the new directory that you
specified. If you did NOT specify "strip streams", you will most likely only have the VIDEO_TS.IFO files created in the new directory. If this happens, you will have to cut and paste the old VOB files over to the new directory.

7) Once everything is done, exit IFOedit, run IFOedit again (Yes, you have to get out of the program and re-run it for this to work) open the new VTS_01_1.IFO file in the NEW directory, and then hit the "get VTS pointers" button.

8) Save the IFO file, and you should be able to hit the "DVD play" button. If the movie plays there, then your set to go! If not, something went wrong, and your DVD will not burn properly.

9) When you verified that the "DVD play" button works and you can see the movie, burn the new directory with all your VOB's and IFO files into your favorite DVD burning program.
Make sure that the new directory is labeled VIDEO_TS or your DVD will not be recognized by your DVD player!
(Prassi or Nero will work, just create a new DVD Data disc, and copy your VIDEO_TS file into the layout, and burn!)

Good luck, and if there are any errors listed, let me know!

And for god's sake, use a DVD-RW first! ;-) Cheaper to use by far for checking your movies!

Daniel

Thanks NBMZ28 for the detailed instructions. I will use them. This will save hours of encoding when the main move is under 4.3 gig.

Regarding testing to a DVD-RW, I'd like to but can't. I bought a Pioneer DVD-RW, burned one test movie to it and now I can't erase it. I tried Nero 5.5.9.0, Prassi PrimoDVD 2.0, DVDIt PE, and all fail with errors when erasing. Tried each program several times.
I wonder if it is because I did not erase the RW before using it the first time. I saw something on Pioneer's site that said you have to erase before using it the first time. Didn't see that until I had already burned a movie. If I can't fix this problem, guess I'll buy another RW for use in testing.

Thanks again for the help.

Hey there,

You should be able to do a quick-format on your DVD-RW, as that's what I end up doing
with mine. I never give it a full-format.

I think you might have to investigate issues with your DVD-RW setup. What burner are you running? If possible, try and set it for the master IDE bus. I've had MAJOR issues setting
this burner up for a slave, as it never was reliable, and I couldn't erase any DVD-RW I put in the unit. This was on XP though, so that could be an issue as well.

Are you using the Pioneer A03 or A04?

Daniel, I am using a Pioneer 104 (A04) under Win XP Pro. I do have the burner set up as a slave to the C drive. I can burn DVD-R's with no problem. I'll try making the burner a master on the secondary IDE port (there is a hard drive on the secondary master now.)

I used your instructions for IfoEdit and they worked great. This will save me a lot of time to not have to encode when the full DVD is over 4.7 gigs but the ripped movie is under 4.7 gigs. Thanks for the help.

EDIT: Moved the Pioneer 104 to secondary IDE as master (and only) drive. Still got errors trying to erase the Pioneer DVD-RW disc. Quick format in Nero appears to work - at least gives no error message, but even after formating, I still can't burn to the RW or erase it. I toggled hte IDE port between DMA and PIO mode as recommended on Pioneer's web site. Still a no go.

You should leave the Pioneer as a master unit. Even though they have buffer underrun protection, they should be setup as master units, due to the needed speed and bandwidth of data.

I used your instructions for IfoEdit and they worked great. This will save me a lot of time to not have to encode when the full DVD is over 4.7 gigs but the ripped movie is under 4.7 gigs. Thanks for the help.

Now, just in case no one told you yet, the maximum size of a DVD-R is really around 4.3GB. It's advertised as a 4.7, but in reality, it works out to only 4.3, so if your having issues with a DVD-RW, that might contribute to your woes. BTW, I know your using Nero, but what version? I'm at 5.5.8.2, and almost ready to upgrade to 5.5.9.x...If your using an earlier version, upgrade to the newest one. Alternatively, you can use the Veritas RecordNow software, as it works fine with my burner as well.

Now, worst case scenario, you may have pooched your atapi drivers inadvertantly, especially if you installed any of the roxio/adaptec software. If this is the case, get your hands on a WinXP boot CD, boot off it, choose the option to repair your install, and let it run. It will update all your original Windows files, and hopefully it will put you in a better state than before.

Another thing you may want to do is go into the BIOS, and disable the ATA-66 for your DVD-R drive.

Good luck!

Daniel

just a suggestion...I was having problems "truly" erasing my DVD-RW w/Nero, as well. DVD Decrypter kept telling me my disc wasn't empty, even though I went through the trouble of doing a full-erase already. What I tried - and has worked for me so far - is to do a full erase followed by a quick erase...don't ask me why, it was a weird hunch that has worked every time.

Thanks for the tip neko_loco, but it didn't work for me. Nero full erase and quick erase both failed with errors. Doesn't say what the error is. I tried PrimoDVD 2.0, and the full erase and quick erase also fail with errors. Since I can write DVD-R's with no problem, I am wondering if the Pioneer DVD-RW media is bad. Here's a possibilty: when I first got the RW disc I wrote a 1 hour movie to it with no problem. I have been unable to erase it though. I also cannot add data to the RW. A few days after first using the RW disc, I read on Pioneer's web site that you should erase the DVD-RW when it is new, before writing data to it for the first time. Since I didn't do this, I wonder if I messed up the RW media.
