Why won't 16X dvd media work with dvd shrink?

I just recently bought Memorex single layer DVD-R media 16x. I don't think I ever used 16X media before w/Dvd Shrink. Is 16X media compatible w/ DVD Shrink? When I try this media I get a "burn error."
the burn error reads as follows:

It has nothing to do with Shrink.
Burning 16X Memorex at 2.4X in not good either.
Get better media and try burning at 8X.
99% of all problems are between the computer and the chair.

This looks more like a firmware issue. Here's your drive,and 2.FA looks like the latest update and it was released back on Oct 13,2006:

Since this drive is a rebadged NEC 3500AG,you may be able to go over to cdfreaks.com and find a way to crossflash it to the ligitimate NEC 3500AG firmware. Try cdfreaks.com/dvd-rw drives/NEC.
Or pick up some verbatim -16x media.They've been around a while,so your firmware should have a better chance of being able to handle them.
If going with verbatim or Taiyo Yuden media,bump that burn speed to 4x or 8x. Slow burning on them can cause issues.
BTW: Please edit out your Nero serial #'s at the top of the log.

From what I saw Saugmon is right on it being a firmware-media issue. It doesn't appear to be a matter of quality this time. Ritek is usually decent media. It's good to see Memorex selling better than what they have been recently. But older drives with old firmware have a tendency to have problems with some of the newer 16X media. Hopefully some Verbatim will take care of the problem. However it goes though, it isn't Shrink causing the problem. Get media the drive can handle and the problem should be solved.

how do I change the burn speed to 8X? I looked around on shrink and Nero and didn't see anywhere to change it, sorry but I am kind of a novice at this stuff.

in shrink when you click backup then the tab that says burn setting.
have to look for Nero
this was at going into recode then burn
what Nero do you have?

I appreciate your help. I think I will try different media that is NOT 16X. I looked at the firmware stuff and it seems to be over my head, and I don't won't to screw anything up worse than it already is.

buying online would be the place to look.

Also try Sam's club is there's any around you. They usually carry the older speed media. Bestbuy is a good source for the 4x verbatim digital movie quality discs.
Keep that crossflashing in mind. The members of cdfreaks.com know their stuff when it comes to crossflashing drives.

If your going to buy a new one. why not flash it first.
if i flashed my drive and did not screw it up anyone can do it.when it comes to a pc i am lost most of the time. thats why we have AD to help.

You have a good point. A lot of it comes down to time also. I would rather spend $50 on a new drive versus spending 5 hours reading and teaching myself how to flash. Maybe I am making it harder than it has to be, I don't know.

when i flashed my nec 1100a to a 1300a there where no guides but it when pretty smoothly. i do recall sometime with adding WinRAR to complete it. i still do not understand it fully .i just know it was not to bad after all said and done 2hrs invested

Another drive would be a good route. You can still use that maddog burner as the reader and the new burner strictly for burning. This will eliminate a lot of wear and tear off your new burner.
Also makes an easier backup process-set it and forget it. Or you can even try On The Fly without ripping to your harddrive/s.
I've seen Lite-ons going for under $35 including shipping at newegg.com.

That's a good point about using my Mad Dog as a reader. My next question was going to be what brand/model is a good burner to use with spending a lot of money? I burn single and dual layer media. Are the Lite-Ons good burners w/o spending much $.

Lite-ons are pretty decent drives. All the latest drives are 18x and dvd-ram capability,so I'm not up to what the HOT model #'s.
Liteon are booktyping capable drives. I'm a benq fanatic,but they are no longer made,but I am well stocked up.Plextor also another great brand,but they do have a few rebadged models. All these drives have bitsetting capability to booktype the plus format media (+R/+RW/+R DL) to dvd-rom. This booktyping gives your backups a lot better chance at being recognized in more dvd drives.
With the price of DL media coming down,more people may get no disc errors when trying to play their DL backups on their standalones. By booktyping,you're fooling players into thinking the are the original disc which is dvd-rom format.
Lots of firmware updates for Lite-on as well. Some brands- (HP) issue no firmware updates after releasing drives.

When spending a lot of money I suggest the Plextor. I've got a 716 and think highly of it. For the more frugally minded the Lite-On is a decent brand. You'll find most of the name brands are, HP, Sony, LG, Samsung, BenQ and the like. You just have to be sure they have all the features you want, such as booktyping.

I've got a 740 HP in one of my PCs. I updated the firmware shortly after getting it. It's been a long time with no more firmware upgrades. However the drive is still working great and I've not had any problems. I'm happy with it, even if it was to go bad now. Knock on wood. It's been a good burner and an even better reader. It has been one of the burners to disprove ROMs read better.

My HP 640c is a very good reader,no complaints there.
Lightscribe-decent after downloading the lightscribe ELCU utility to help enhance the image.
Burning-No more. Way too many crc errors on the few maxell hitachi and verbatim backups from it.
No firmware updates since the day I got it bundled with my HP PC.

I suspect your main burner is the Plex 716. Mine gets the duty most of the time, especially when burning video. Looks like we have similar hardware and use it for the same purposes. What did you use to scan the HP for CRC errors?

I didn't use the HP to scan for errors. I found another easy effective way to test your backups-by re-ripping them back to the harddrive.
What good is a backup if you need to re-rip them later on and they were full of crc errors?

Over the years I've had very few backups with enough errors to prevent them from copying. Different drives and none consecutive. The HP is even a good burner. It's just in a case with a Plex and the HP doesn't booktype. I always booktype if a system has a drive that supports it. Just a habit nowadays. LOL The flawed DVDs play great, just enough errors to fail at a copy. Good media, proven drives, same methods. The problem has eluded me. I know the drive didn't get the burn rigt at that particular instant, but the cause is what I'm missing. ;)

Whoops! I meant Without spending a lot of $.

Most of the one's I've beem in have carried Lite-On, Sony, and HP. Sometimes they don't have them all in stock. Sort of depends on the store. If you can't find what you want local, you can go with Newegg, ZipZoomFly, or one of the other online vendors. Lots of places carry DVD Drives now. You can check some of the big stores and pick up local if you live near a store.
