Well the scan turned up "No Threats Detected". I don't know if it's doing anything other than sitting on my desktop with a rather bad title. But, it probably does have some other purpose and very well could be doing something. I just don't know what.

If you start up in Safe Mode, you should be able to delete it.

As your computer restarts but before Windows launches, press F8.

Alright, I'll try that. I'll probably sound noobish for saying this, but I'm not insanely good at debugging computers. I can do other things with them (I do a lot of website and graphics stuff, as well as some game modding), but I'm pretty horrible at debugging. But anyway, when exactly do I press F8? What would the screen look like? Is it when it's a black screen with grey text? And when I'm done, how do I get out of safe mode?

Straight after the BIOS screen, before Windows has a chance to start.

Yes. You will see a screen of options. Choose either "safe mode" or "safe mode with networking"

Restart the computer and this time don't touch any keys.

Well I tried deleting it after restarting in SafeMode. It still wouldn't let me. I'll just wait until we reformat it. That'll take everything out and back to day one. Unless, of course, you guys have any other ideas. But if not, like I said, we're already reformatting it soon.

I know your in a hurry to fix this. Im sure with some time we could figure it out. But who knows what the outcome would be. Have to know what is broke before it can be fixed and even that can take a while.

Let us know if things change but consider this. A format means they wone. What happens the next time? A full format for me with reload would be a week.

I will trust in whatever you decide to do. Bk :-)

No need to format.

Click Start>Run type in cmd and hit Enter. From the command prompt type the following:

dir /a "C:\DOCUME~1\home\desktop > desk.txt & start desk.txt

A log will pop up in notepad.

Please post its contents without editing it.

There is a free utility called Unlocker which you can get here

Well, bkf, we were already planning on reformatting before this file came along. Indochine, I've already tried the unlocker. After you turn it on, you're suppose to be able to rightclick the file and click Unlocker. Unlocker wasn't in the problem file's dropdown when I tried it. KotaGuy, I got this error when I tried what you said:

that /a switch for DIR looks a bit funny. Attribute switch but no attribute letter. Maybe it was meant to be /ah for hidden?

I suggest typing each of these one after the other in this order exactly as shown here

dir "C:\DOCUME~1\home\desktop" > desk.txt

dir /ah "C:\DOCUME~1\home\desktop" >> desk.txt

dir /ar "C:\DOCUME~1\home\desktop" >> desk.txt

dir /as "C:\DOCUME~1\home\desktop" >> desk.txt

notepad desk.txt

This final one will open notepad and there will be a log which you can copy and paste (all of it please)

Actually... the command works... I just forgot the end quotes.

It should be this....

dir /a "C:\DOCUME~1\home\desktop" > desk.txt & start desk.txt

Well, I've got the log now. KotaGuy, your correction worked. I can post the log, but the name of the problem file is still one that I'm not sure would be a good idea to post here. Like I said, the idiot who made this.. virus, or whatever it is, made it so when it renamed, it renamed to a long porn-type name. If you guys still want it posted in here anyway, I will edit it in. But it's a rather graphic and disgusting title. Or if you want I could replace it with something like NAMEHERE. I don't know, however you guys need it to fix this thing.

Well, you have my permission to send it to me in a PM. I am an adult!! Or change the file name to "Bad File Name" to post on here. We need to know the extension. I would have thought the attributes might be handy to know, kotaguy? You know, hidden, system, read only?

Hiei3, try this tip I found - This might save your embarrassment until the cure is found - you could see if this works -

There is a way to hide all icons on the desktop in XP. You can hide all your desktop icons from view so your desktop is completely clear, and you will still have one click access to all your desktop icons.

Simply right click on your task bar at the bottom of the screen and click on ?Toolbars? and then click on ?Desktop?. This adds a small ?Desktop>>? item to the task bar. When you click on the ?>>? all your desktop icons are displayed, including their descriptions. Now, to hide your desktop icons, just right click on your desktop, click on ?Arrange Icons By?, and then click on ?Show Desktop Icons? (to remove the check mark).

"That?s all you need to do", it says.

Actually... I need to know the file name.... not just the extension. To delete it you are going to need to End Task explorer and delete it from the command prompt.

Without knowing the name of the file... I cannot give you proper instructions for it.

Do not edit the log.

Well Indochine, it's not really an embarassment issue. It's just more of a nuissance. Below is the log, replaced with BadFileName (I'll leave the extensions). Indochine and KotaGuy, I'll PM the log to you guys fully unedited. I don't mean to make this so difficult, but.. well I'm sure you know the reason by now.

Meh... I hate viruses.

Anyway here's the log with the problem-file's name edited (extensions are still the same). There was a space after the name and before the first ".jpg" so I left that there in case it counts for anything. The file is the 3rd line from where the dates start:

Click Start>Run type in cmd and hit Enter. Leave that window open.

Hit CTRL+ALT+DELETE to bring up the Task Manager. End Task explorer.exe.

Your Desktop will disappear... this is normal... don't worry about it.

Go back to the commmand window you opened up and type in the following:

del /q C:\DOCUME~1\home\desktop\2 real l~.jpg

And hit Enter.

Reboot.

The file should no longer be on your Desktop.

Ok KotaGuy, thanks, I'll try it. When I'm typing the file name, should I just shorten it like you said and end it with a ~? Or do I need to put the whole file name?

The ~(tilde) character is an old 8.3 naming convention thing. A throwback from old DOS. It allows you to shorten a name without having to type the entire name out.

The problem you have been having with not being able to delete the file is an issue with a Windows limitation of only being able to have 256 characters in a file name.

OMFG!!! I was so convinced it'd word! It seemed perfect!!! I got this error when I tried what you said. I think the spaces are a problem because it seems to be taking it as 2 different names. Of course, I can't rename it, so I can't fix that. Here's what it said.

*sighs* Any other ideas as to how to get around this?
Guys I really appreciate the time you're spending on this, by the way.
