Hi :)

I have a NEC DVD_RW ND-2500A and have never had a real problem burning DVDs, but since I bought a whole load of "RiDisc 8x DVD-R Discs" it fails to even start burning.

It only give me the option of burning 1x, 2x, and 2.4x, all with the same error. ("failed to start disc at once")

It seems to burn fine on any speed with a datawrite dvd, but ive just bought loads of RiDiscs!

I can burn fine on my other computer with them...

I'll post log below, i'd be really greatful for any help as im pretty close to throwing something through a window! :P

Thanks!!!!!!!

Hi TheSwampy
1st thing let's edit out the serial # in the top of the log - begins w/ 1C. Don't need someone else using it.

The illegal disc error you get in the log is usually caused by the firmware not supporting the discs you are using. The burning speeds listed also mean the same thing - disc not supported by the firmware.
Doesn't always mean it will fail but in your case looks like it does.

For the NEC - I'm trying to find the right firmware for it but having a hard time. Don't see any previous version listing 1.70.
Did the drive come with the pc? If so who the pc manufacturer?

Nero Version: 7.2.0.3
Nero can use an update too - quite a few fixes and enhancements since the version you're using. The latest is 7.8.5.0

CdRomPeripheral : HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8163B atapi Port 1 ID 1 DMA: Off
Probably not playing into this problem but turn DMA back on for this drive. Here's a link

hey, thanks for quick reply!

Woops, didnt see the serial there. (dont know how to edit a post...)

I built the computer about 2 years ago. I tried for about a week solid to find firmware but it seems my exact drive doesn't actually exist!? :S

Im downloading updated Nero now, do you think that will help? or do you think that I should just buy a newer (more supported) drive?

Cheers
J

To edit your post click on what looks like a pencil w/ paper.
Here's a pic:

.

Update a Nero may help - good to do anyhow but looking like this is more of a drive/media problem.

NEC lists the drive and has the latest firmware as 1.0B. Might want to try it though may not work. Here's a link: 1.0B.

Since drives are so cheap now picking up another one is not a bad idea at all. Look at LiteOn's or Pioneers.
