when you repartition a hard drive does it still keep everything from the first partition but just overwrite it or something, and if so does it make comp slower?

what do you mean by repartition, as in splitting the drive into 2 or more or by deleting original partition with all the info in it & making a new 1 with no info in it?

if you have enough space, you can make two or more partitions on the fly by using partition magic
or you can delete everything by using Fdisk

yes but ive heard when you delete everything it doesnt really delete it, it still stays on the harddrive but just isnt in a partition or something

it's marked as space that can be written over in the file systems, but is still physically there until other data is written over. that's the reason data recovery software can work.

is there any way to get rid of the old data cuz it seems to slow down the computer, before i partitioned the hard drive it was quite a bit faster and i think it may be from the old data and what not that was on the previous partition possibly

old data would have no effect. if the drive is physically slowing down, it's either underpowered or dying.

doesn't matter; hard drives can be dead when you get them. it just happens. make sure your power supply is good and strong. erased data won't slow your drive down any.

could be a variety of things, not just just your hard drive. what's different about your setup now than previous? what is your idle computer usage? pc specs?

pretty much everything is exactly the same including programs and what not, my idle cpu usage is 1 to 2% and i have 320gb hd, pentium 4 3ghz processor, 512mb Ram, windows xp, and an ati 9250 radeon graphics card
