Well, it burns disks just fine for me. That's all I use it for. I've been using Nero since version 3, and it has always done the job.
Trouble is, Nero stopped being just a burning app and got ambitions to be a one-stop shop, a video suite, an audio suite, a CD ripping app, a photo album suite, etc. It got bloated, and it led to all these adolescent "experts" who think that they just have to fire up Nero to do whatever multimedia task is needed. If it goes wrong (As it sometimes will) they're like, "Help me momma here's my Nero log!" I say, "Horses for courses". I use a number of different apps to do whatever it is I need done. Each step of the way I can see what's happening and I know what action to take if I'm not happy. I fire up Nero at the end to actually make the disk. The burning engine is not really much changed from version 6 anyway. It's the UI and all the bloatware and bells and whistles which have been updated.
So maybe a certain somebody should go find some sand that needs pounding... ;-)

Some versions suck; when Ahead improves one thing it tends to screw up others. 7.0.8.2 works beautifully for me, and 7.7.5.1 seems to have few complaints if you can get it installed.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

I've got 7.8.5.0 which seems OK. It burns disks on my LG burner. They start. They burn. They finish. All very dull actually.
When I install Nero I always choose custom install and I uncheck everything except the core burning app. Lately I've had to do some stuff post-install to kill Nero Scout. The last time I had any kind of trouble was about 5 years ago when I had to clean out all traces of Roxio.

@JunkTrash ,
I agree with you to a point, there are a lot of versions of Nero that deserve the thumbs down however as mentioned 7.0.8.2 is a good version as is 7.5.9.0 which is the version of my choice.
Nero also had some "shockers" in their 6 series.

Nero 6.3.02
(found my backup disk.. It's a long time since I saw that)
It always said it had a problem with xp pro sp2, but I never found one. I liked that version, and the 6.6.18 (not totally sure.. the final one from the 6x series) was great. Solid and reliable.. we must have burned a few thousand xbox disks with it.
From what I experience on other peoples machines the burning rom, and Nero express seem to work well.. It's all the rest of the junk that isn't that great. It may be me comparing the 7.x.x against k3b, but I'm sure the older versions burned faster. They certainly seemed to get on with it, burning from the click rather than spending what seems like half an hour drawing pretty graphics on the screen before doing anything. That start smart thing is a pain in the a$$.. jumping in every time you put a blank disk in, and after the burn.. plus windoze trying the same trick is just annoying... I'm so glad I don't have to put up with it at home.

I was given a copy of Nero 7 Demo that I installed a while back and it has all of this extra crap like you were talking about. How would I go about getting rid of all of it w/o losing the burn part? I use RipIt4Me to do all the work and it just points to that part of Nero when it's ready to burn. That's all I use. I would dearly love to get rid of all of the extranious crap that takes up so much space on my computer. And yes I am a n00b at this so please be kind :), thanks!
