hi creaky. I have read with interest the many posts about this topic but I still can't seem to figure out how to fix my problem. I am hoping you can help me. My HP DVD Writer 420n has worked very well for the last 1 1/2 to 2 years. Suddenly last week I started getting an error that says illegal disc error. The crazy thing was that my brother ( who has the same burner, because we both got them at the same time) started getting the same thing. I tried re installing Nero, because I have used the same program since I got it, but that didn't help. I searched and read your forum here, and tried everything I could, but nothing changed. I posted on another afterdawn forum, and someone gave me the links for the newest Nero software so I downloaded that, but nothing changed ( my other posting and the reply is at http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/499331#3017956
I'm hoping you will have time to look at my log file and help me out. The other crazy thing is that if I use Kodak dvds from 3 months ago they work, but the kodak ones from 2 weeks ago don't, as well as the fuji dvds I bought. Cd's also work just fine. Illegal disc error usually means the drives firmware doesn't support the media.
For this log below the media is 16x Ritek - guessing the Fuji's.
Since this drive hasn't had a firmware update in 2 years not all newer media may be supported by it - esp. 16x media.
Kodak uses different manufacturers so the ones you got 3 months ago are probably supported by the firmware but the newer ones may be made by a manufacturer that isn't.
If 2.4x is the max burn speed Nero will give you on the discs you're using then that's another sign that the media isn't supported by the firmware.
The drive will use a default write strategy and speed.
Doesn't always fail but in your case looks like it is.
CD's are more supported by firmware since they've been around much longer than DVD's.
Try using some Verbatims or Taiyo Yudens - those 2 are usually most supported by the drives firmware.
Or look on the label of the Kodaks that work for the 'made in' and burn speed and buy more of them. Though there may be no guarantee that you get the same manufacturer.
Another option if your still having problems finding media that's supported by the drive is get a new one. Much cheaper then they were when you bought this one and they will support more media.

ok so here is the update...I just happeneed to be in tiger direct the other day and saw an HP 940i cd/dvd burner with lightscribe available, so I picked it up.I also got some lightscribe discs, and a 100 pack of hp dvds.When I got home, no matter what I did the new hp dvd burner wouldn't recognize anything I put into it. My brother (the computer guru of the family talked me through a tonne of different things and it seems to work fine, as in it has power, the computer recognizes it, but it won't even see any dvds or cds I put into it. I tried the hp dvds in my old hp burner and they seem to work just fine, even at 8x. Would you recommend staying at 4x or is 8x ok, as long as it is working? My brother is going to try the new hp burner in his computer and probably take it back for me, if it continues to not function. Thanks very much. I appreciate your help. Marki2000.

Depending on who made the HP 8x may be fine. Or even 6x.
To check who made the HP pop one in the drive. In Nero SmartStart go to ToolKit>CD-DVD Speed. The disc tab will list the manufacturer.
Do you have the new burner's jumper pin set to the master or slave depending on which ide connector it's on?
You can also try uninstalling the ide channel and/or the drive itself in device manager. Reboot and let windows do it's thing and reinstall.
