Hi, I'm interested in getting a ds lite but after reading all the posts and stickies I'm still confused with all the m3 cards and terms. Can someone tell me:

1) For a start, what are the things needed for me to buy to have a ds that can use homebrew, play roms stored in my computer and all the stuff. (usb cable? or what?)

2) I can just buy any ds lite rite? Don't have to look for any special signs for homebrew, firmware and such?

3) For the psp, the lower your firmware, the better for downgrading and all that homebrew stuff. For ds issit the same? Or it's alright to upgrade to the latest firmware?

4) What programs do I need to transfer roms and homebrew to the ds?

Thanks!

2. yes. nope.

3. no. there are no such things as [official] firmware upgrades for the ds.

4. this varies depending on what you have in order to play homebrew/backups with.

yup

jgarces07:The shoulder buttons on my DS (not Lite) are not working. Any advice?
nintenut:This is going to sound a bit odd, but it works, put your lips around the trigger and blow really hard, it works.
bee_cup: My DS Lite L button don't work...
nintenut: Put your mouth on it and blow, gets the dust out, and sounds obscene!

4. M3 Slot-2 range (CF/SD/MiniSD/Lite) (Gamemanager for roms, DLDI for homebrew)
M3 Slot-1 (Simply) (no software for roms, DLDI for homebrew)
EZ Flash (EZ Client)

Theres lots of different devices above are just a few (i focused on the M3 as you mentioned it in your first post)

ohhh...so basically, what I need to get for a start is: (for the best of both world)

-m3 lite perfect (slot 2) for homebrew/gba games/ds rom backup
-m3 simply (slot 1) for ds games
-memory card (1gb mini-sd rite?)

What is needed to link my ds to the pc for transfer of data?
What is a passcard?
Is all of the things i mentioned aboth correct? Anything missing that I should buy?

Thanks!

Yes that setup will work, however it is a MicroSD you want, not MiniSD.
You do not connect the DS to a PC, all data is transfered to the MicroSD card(s) using a card reader, you get a MicroSD reader with the M3 DS Simply. You will need a MicroSD card for both the M3 DS Simply and the M3 Lite.

A Passcard is used to boot slot-2 devices (such as the M3 Lite) into DS mode, however if you have an M3 DS Simply you do not need the Passcard as the Simply has a boot slot-2 option.

Oh, icic. Thanks alot man! If I don't have a card reader, there is no other way rite? My dad says card reader is quite hard to install. I'm using a laptop, so is getting a card reader into my laptop like plugging in a usb device and windows will recognise it?

The reader you get with the M3 DS Simply is USB, just plug the MicroSD into it, and plug that into a USB port, Windows automatically recognises it

the m3 ds simply comes with its own card reader that you just plug into your pc , no need to buy any extra card readers .

read the review here mate - http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=content&itemid=243

the r4ds is also another good alternative to the m3 ds simply and also comes with its own card reader .

try here - http://r4ds.net/product.htm

both the m3 and the r4ds need a micro sd memory card , this is used to store the ds roms , i recommend at least a 1 gig micro sd memory card , cheapest place possibly ebay .

the m3 ds simply or r4ds will work with any nintendo ds / ds lite.

as for firmware the m3ds simply and the r4ds are updated often enough by the firmware via there websites .

no programs are needed to transfer ds roms to the micro sd memory card , all you do is plug in your card reader with the micro sd memory card and drag your ds roms onto it , easy as that .

p.s. the roms that you use for the m3 ds simply and the r4ds should have the file extension .nds !
