Nero 6.6 patched to most current release. I have a dvd movie that I ripped to a HD. I imported the .vob files into NeroVision Express2 and then I Export to a VCD FILE format because I want to get MPEG1 format and 352x240 size.
The export works fine until I get to 2hrr:33min:41sec into the process, with 5min:57sec to go, it freezes. No error message, nothing. I have to kill the process to get control back. I've checked the obvious such as disk space, possible task interference, etc. No luck. Now I am wondering if there is some sort of file size 'cap' or time limit cap that causes this behavior (would be nice if the program explained it).
Any thoughts on what is causing this? Any suggested work arounds? And yes, I do want mpeg1 output, with 352x240.
If I want .avi output format, how can I do that with Nero?

To get AVI container format in Nerovision Express in Edit mode/window, click the Export button. All manner of export formats are available.
As to your current problem, I don't know for sure what's causing it but here are a couple of suggestions:
Don't try to encode and burn in the same step. Use the Image Recorder as the output target and create an image file. Burn the image file with Nero or ImgBurn in a separate step.
Use 6.6.0.18 if you're using Nero 6. It can be found here:
Ty..but to clear up a couple of things:
In the Export window I can select from a number of 'Templates' (e.g. dvd, SVCD, VCD, dv. The format (file type and aspect ratio) changes accordingly. If I select DV, I must specify DV Type1, or, DV Type2. What is the difference?
As far as the burning goes, I am NOT subsequently burning a CD or DVD...I want a single file saved to my HD so I can transfer it to a memory stick to use in my Clie.
Select Custom as the template type. You then have mpeg1, mpeg2, and AVI available. Under compressor you can choose x264 or XviD or one of the others if you want them. Nero Recode does mp4 in a nonstandard version.
I believe DV format is the format used on DV video tape. You probably want XviD AVIs.
OK, thank you. I followed your advice, and the resultant .avi file is 33.5 GB!!! The original files on the DVD are 4.4 GB. Something is not right...any suggestions?

I'm not sure why you got so large an AVI file. If you click the ? button to the right of the Compressor menu. you'll get a window in which you can calculate the bitrate for a certain sized AVI file or adjust the slider to get a smaller or larger file. Of course there's a quality trade-off.
There's a free version of Dr DivX you could use to convert DVD to AVI. ImTOO's DDVtoDivX converter is a good commercial program.
I like DrDivx. It's free. You'll have to run the output of DrDivx, a DivX file, through VideoDub to create an AVI container file. Just be sure to select Direct Stream Copy under the Video menu. VirtualDub is free.
