i have downloaded a file from utorrent and after days of downloading it has downloaded into a AVI file which in window media player does not play, i get the sound but no picture. When it opens up it says aquiring codec please help someone

Both the Video and Audio boxes should list the codecs used to create the file.
The status boxes will say if the codecs are present on your PC.
If a codec is not present, then it has to be downloaded and installed.
Download and run GSpot, drag the AVI file onto the window and check for codecs.

If the codecs are shown as installed, then I would be inclined to try another media player before doing anything else.
