When I try to convert an XviD file to dvd using Nero Vision, everything starts off fine. Under video options I have everything set to automatic and automatic (fit to disc). The "Total space used bar" says Im using 4.37 out of 4.38gbs. Yet when the encoding is finished and the burning starts it tells me that the disc isn't big enough. Ive tried two separate xvids and I get the same error. Also, why does Nero Vision say 4.37gb out of 4.38gb when my blank DVD's hold 4.7gb? I even tried enabling overburn, but that just resulted in an "Invalid command" error right when burning started. Ive used older versions of Nero Vision in the past and have never experienced this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

4.38GB is the most amount you can write on a DVD5! Yes it holds 4.7 but you need some room for lead in and lead out!

and what version of Nero do you have? some are buggy.......

Er, sorry, but it's nothing to do with Lead Ins/Outs. The problem arises due to conflicting numbering systems.

The prefix Giga originally meant (& still does except in computing circles!) a factor of 10 to the power 9 ie: 1,000,000,000

So 4.7 Giga bytes is really 4,700,000,000 bytes and this is the ACTUAL capacity of a DVD.

However, in computing circles, folks work in powers of 2 not 10 so computer operating systems take a gigabyte to be 2 to the power 30 ie: 1,073,741,824 bytes. (A close approximation to 1,000,000,000 but a power of 2 , not 10)

Note that this is bigger than a real giga-anything hence you get fewer gigabytes of data (as counted by Windows) able to fit onto your DVD (as advertised by its manufacturer! lol)

4.38 x 1,073,741,824 <Roughly Equals> 4.7 x 1,000,000,000
(4.38Gb to your OS)==============(4.7Gb as stated by manuf!)

So, the size of a DVD is 4.7 Gigabytes OR 4.38 Gigabytes just depending on what counting system you're using. Both "sizes" are the SAME and CORRECT!

Confusing innit? :))

There Can Be Only One!

I stand corrected....... thank you Highie for your clarity! I always thought it was for lead ins and outs....... and now I am sticky pasting your reply! thanks..... seeeeeeee still learning! LOL

now to the log:
at a quick glance......

Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS'

this is a Roxio/Sonic driver that is packet writing program that interferes with Nero! uninstall it! then run the Roxio Zapper:

this is a common problem and will hinder your burning!

Disc Manufacturer: RITEKF - 1

Ritek is a decent manufacturer of media but I would use MADE IN JAPAN media like Taiyo Yuden or just buy Verbatim (top notch media but not MIJ). Look for the MIJ on label of spindle or box!

you are using up half your memory..... no multi tasking or going on the internet and try to close some unnecessary programs running in the background while burning.

update your firmware to 1.03 found here:
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2358
Firmware is programming that is inserted into a programmable memory area of your drive, thus becoming a permanent part of a drive. This 'software' is called firmware and can be updated with a firmware flasher. A firmware upgrade can add new functionality to your drive. Also bug fixes and improvements are done by firmware upgrades. It also adds more media codes and write strategies to the drive to improve burning capabilities and disk recognition.

ok.... on the second log I see you updated your firmware... GOOD!

Quote:
Burn process completed successfully at 16x (22,160 KB/s)
burn at half the rated speed of your disk. not at maximum! you will have a better successful rate if you do!

Quote:

you are burning over the limit of your DVD! 4489MB is your limit... you're at 5005MB! you're over burning! no wonder your burns fail!

these are changes that you must do or you will continue to have coasters...... the only one that is acceptable is your disks.... Ritek is decent.... not the best but decent.... when buying new media get the MIJs.... that's even better!

Removed the Roxio file. Not sure why that was there, don't have anything by Roxio installed. Also not sure why Nero is picking up DMA as off. Checked in the device manager and the Optiarc is set for Ultra DMA 4-Ultra 66 and my Sony DVD-ROM is set to Ultra DMA 2 -Ultra 33. Not sure if I have to enable DMA somewhere in Nero. Reason I was trying to overburn was because Nero Vision is encoding my movies too big (even though I select automatic (fit to disc) before hand). Tried to overburn just to see if it would work. It didnt. To re-iterate its not the fact that Im making coasters, burners work fine. Its that I can't convert an XviD to a DVD because Nero vision is encoding the movies too big, even though it should be "fitting it to disc". All signs show that it will fit before encoding takes place, but once it comes time to burn it ejects my blank dvd and tells me the file is too large. Thanks again to all for your help.

Can I offer a suggestion? (will anyway, lol, but, of course you can just ignore it if you like :)

What I do (quite often, even though I'm not getting the same "problems" as yourself) is just ignore the size Nero is making your final compilation. I do sometimes get a warning from Nero (NVE) that what I'm compiling is going to be too big for a DVD5 but will still fit on a DVD9 so do I want Nero to adjust the bitrate to make it small enough to fit onto a DVD5? I tell it "No!" and just go right ahead with the "too big" compilation but DON'T burn it to disc: burn it to folders on my HDD (or an Image File in Burning ROM).

Then you can shrink the final result to fit a DVD5 using DVDShrink! Other (big?) advantage of this method is that you can also check the result before committing it to plastic; a good idea I always think. If it's in folders, WMP, Show Time or many others will play em and an image file can easily be loaded into a virtual drive (using Image Drive or other) for playing with WMP or Show Time (or just exploring).

When using this approach (esp in NVE) it also means that you minimize the compression (& therefore maximise the quality) of the resulting video. Letting Nero reduce quality to fit a DVD5 can lead to a final compilation that may be only 3.5Gb whereas shrinking one that was too big will always give you a 4.38Gb result; can't be bad can it?

Might be worth adopting that approach if all else fails?

That is a good idea, and if I cant solve this problem I will definitely do that. Still, bothers me that Nero Vision is encoding the file too big. Never had this problem with past versions.

Worse comes to worst, just use some other proggy to transcode, there's plenty out there & several of em a damn sight faster than Nero is too! (eg: ConvertXtoDVD or WinAVIVideoConverter, both of which I've had considerable success with :)

BTW, either of you guys able to offer any insights on my li'l problem, huh? See my post here pls?

or you can use a better program (IMHO!) called ConvertXtoDVD! comes out right the first time and you can burn it right from the program or use the final conversion to burn with any burning software of your choice! It's the only program I use for AVI to DVD! And it hasn't failed me yet! Nero always has problems!

Hmmm, I thought I said ConvertXtoDVD but nm, lol.

Yes, Nero can often have problems transcoding (and in other areas) but it's not always Nero's fault. People do the strangest things when they're messing about with AV files: altering bitrates, using odd configurations for Codecs and, in particular, messing about with the audio parameters. DVD specs are very picky about what is compliant and transcoders will automatically attempt to write the VOB files in the correct configurations but if the source file is using parameters that are way off base there can be major difficulties.

If your source files are not your own then you may find that the 'problems' lie there (some files are so alien that they just become unreadable by anyone except the person who originally made em, cos they're the only ones using their particular bunch of crazy settings, lol). Even if you've created the source files yourself, you should check that you've used "standard" settings in doing so, otherwise you may be asking just too much of poor old Nero's transcoding engine.

Sometimes, the only way forward is to just look for another copy of the source material and use that instead. Disheartening, I know, to have to start from scratch on a project but it can occasionally be the quickest way to get it done.

HAd the same sort of problem - I've found that you cannot trust Nero to ALWAYS fit the media into the DVD size 4.38GB It always works for me if it's no more than 4.36GB

(You play with the video size KB / audio (ie Stereo / Dolby 2 etc)

You can also reduce the size by disabling the Nero Smart Encoding
