Hello, I have been backing up my dvd's for awhile now and have not had any problems until now. I use a Pioneer A04 and DVD Shrink. Usually it would take me 60 min to back up a DVD. Well, a couple nights ago I put in my copy of Vampire Hunter D:Blood Lust and everything looked normal, the green bar at the top of DVD Shrink was all green, no Red...so I went ahead and started backing it up, but right off the bat I knew something was weird because it took 120 min to back it up as uposed to the normal 60min. Then when it was done backing it up, and I tried to burn it, it told me the file size was too big to fit on the media. This is on the same media I've been using for quite a while now. Then I let a friend borrow the back up and he tried to make a copy of that but it gave him errors. Then when he tried to back up a differant movie, DVD Shrink did the same thing to him that it did to me. Any idea's what may have caused this? I feel like maybe my Vampire Hunter D was cursed or something :) cuz now it takes 120min to back up Every dvd...it sucks to have to wait 2 hours!
Any help would be much appriciated.
Thanks

Hello,
No I havent installed anything lately, but I also havent defraged lately either...I will give that a try.
I thought it was Really strange that the exact same thing would happen to my friend after he tryed to copy the disc that started the problems with mine.

I have Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust as well (awesome flick!).
I am using DVD Shrink 3.0 beta 5 in conjunction with Nero 5.5.10.50.
I will try backing up my copy and post my results asap!

Drat! I just checked and I have the first one, Vampire Hunter D special edition - not Bloodlust. I'll try anyway as they appear to be made by the same company, for what it's worth.
Damn, now I need to get Bloodlust! Thought I had it.

When you say DVD Backup takes 120mins but normally takes 60mins, are you referring to the whole process, ie: rip, compress and burn, or is this just DVD Shrink?

Vampire Hunter D (not Bloodlust) ran fine.
3,952 MB (no red)
Approx 7 min. to process (after deep analysis)
Approx. 30 min. burn time on Sony DRU-500A with Fuji dvd-r 2.4X.

Thanks for the responces....I think I figured it out. The reason it took so long, was because it had to compress everything so much. And I dont have the fastest computer in the world, in fact I could use a new one. The only thing I still dont understand is why it ripped the files to a size that was too large to fit on a dvd. I tried it again, and it did the same thing..so I just ended up looking at the VOB files and deleting out one of the special features.

7mins is fast but it will be for Ripping only, no compression will be done at 7mins, guaranteed! Best i can get with a high spec system is around 12mins at 5% compression

Hey all,
For giggles and grins I tried this:
Equilibrium (GREAT flick, check it out if you haven't)
Full disc-5,671 MB
15 min 11sec. @ 28% compression
System specs:
P4 3.06HT
2 x 512 Mushkin pc2100 ddr
Gigabyte GA-8INXP mobo
WinXP Pro
Lite On LTD 166S for ripping
Oriphus, I know the cpu determined alot of the speed but what other system components play the biggest factor in ripping/encoding speed?
Am I reading DVD Shrink wrong? It states 72 % for 'automatic' and 'ratio'. This equates to 28% compression right? Or am I totally missing something?

Rotary-
I am using 3.0 beta 5, and DVD Shrink is supposed to do Everything for you, so no I didnt compress it after I ripped it to the HD.
Its all good, I have found a way around the problem. It seems, some DVD's will just take that long for me. As i had a movie called Human Traffic that was only 3,895MB(or some where around there) and it only took 30 min to rip...so apparently it all depends on whether or not the disc needs to be compressed, and how heavily it needs to be compressed.

nuklehead, try alternative software like DVD2One or CloneDVD as these programs use different transcoding techniques which might be faster than DVD Shrink.
If a DVD's size is below 4.7GB (DVD5) then you just need to use DVD Decrypter in these steps:
1. Read (ISO mode)
2. Write (ISO mode)
3. Done

No Nephilim, you getting it spot on. Most important factors are
1). Processor - Yours is very fast (mine is 2.53)
2). RAM - Again you have a good amount
3). The reading speed of the DVD ROM/Writer - ROM's tend top read faster.
Your time sounds about normal for 28% with what you have got. Its about 18-20mins for me at that. However, with 28% you should really do deep analysis 0 this adds another 25mins to the time probably

Having the same problem with Shrink beta 5 making files that are too big for Nero to burn. How do you know which VOB is safe to remove to make the DVD smaller? Trying to backup Bulletproof Monk which is a large movie!

Just lower the output in the preference menu to around 4400MB if 4446MB is to large for Nero. I used to get errors with Nero saying its too large, but i enable Overburn and it worked just fine.

DVDDemon-
I just viewed the VOB's in WinDVD and when I came across one that was just a special feature, I deleted it.

Thanks, Oriphus! I always do deep analysis if there is any compression going on, I just failed to mention it.
