I forgot my adminstrative password

I read many threads on how to reset your administrative password,however i am at a standstill.I have not used my laptop in awhile and since that time forgot my password.I tried the booting into safe mode and reseting it like that,by pressing F8 but when it does i still get the administrative password box comes up as well.That method i read about does not work.Does anyone have any other info about this matter,because i do not want to reformat.Thanks in advance.

Just lurking about. Why if it's so easy to retrieve, is a password needed? Seems as if there are programs to crack anything on Windows. Is anything secure?
