G Spot will tell you what Audio and Video codecs were used and if they are installed. After installing G Spot, choose "open with" for your video and browse to G Spot. Would it not be nice if you actually explained what kind of file you downloaded? Not that Mistycat is not helping you, but she is having to make assumptions. Why not make it easier for your questions to be answered by detailing your posts?
There is a reason behind my post, apart from me being an a***.
You can either do what Mistycat told you and download codecs, or you could VLC, to play the files, if you do not want codecs clogging up your mind, VLC works straight out of the EXE, no further adjustments are usuaully required, unlike Media Player Classic and Mplayer.
If it is in an ISO or CD image. (Usually just one or two files) like .daa or any other image fromat (This is worth a try if you have no idea what to open the file with) try these four programs listed from best to worst (in my opinion):
