I am planning to buy a external hard drive, if it breaks do I lose the data on it? Can I still retrieve the data on it after it breaks? What is your suggestions so I don't lose data, I really don't want to put everything on discs, this is the reason why I want to buy a external hard drive so I can empty my hard drive on my computer, it is almost full and I have pictures, music and videos on it. Thanks

Elsie

Yes.

Maybe. Data recovery fees can run into hundreds of dollars.

Belts and braces. External HDD and disks.

Why not? It's cheaper.

Buy 2, 3, or however many external drives you can afford.

also put them onto cd or dvd disks so that if you lose the drive you'll still have the disks or other drive(s). always have original plus a copy so if lose 1 you'll still have the other.

Hard drives don't last for ever. They have moving parts. They have a "mean time between failures" measured in millions of hours, but any individual drive could fail at any time. Also, a power surge or blackout while the drive was in use could damage the data. Users who store valuable data on hard drives need to be aware of these facts.
