this is what i have

xp 2100 cpu
k7v dragon plus
maxtor 40 gig 7200 rpm
pioneer dvr-106d 4x dvd burner
sony ddu1612 16x dvd reader

the fastest read speed i can get is about 4x but 2 weeks ago i was reading at about 14x i was wondering what could cause this and if there is any way of speeding it up i never flashed the burner or dvd player. in the last 2 weeks the only thing i did was installed nero 6

Update your ASPI drivers as Nero uses its own set of ASPI drivers.
This should solve the problem! :D

Yeah - i hate the way Nero does that. I think you can uninstall the Nero ASPI layers (even though you dont use a SCSI drive, you still need the SCSI interface) and update to Adaptec 4.71

NO, not at all. Infact, it is needed for copying CD's and DVD's. Nero usually installs its own version, as does Roxio, but i always recommend installing the Adaptec 4.71/4.60 ASPI layers.
